Gonna throw my computer out the window...

Ok my floppy drive keeps going crazy.

It gets into this cycle of trying to read a disk when there isnt on in there. Every 30 seconds or so it tries to access it again and again and again ... you get get the point. It is so annoying and for some reason i think it has something to do with MS virtual PC because it only starts doing this after i start VPC. if i reboot it is fine until i have to use VPC again.

thoughts/help ?

Sounds like something is repeatedly checking to see if there is a disk in the drive or not. I don't know what you could do other than unplug it, stop running the offending software, or maybe keep a blank disk in the drive (which might minimize the seeking and retries).

I recently had this problem and narrowed it down to a bad Diskeeper 2007 update (build 693), and after I updated to 698 the random floppy accessing disappeared. I was highly annoyed until I fixed it.

John, zig3695.........some nerds you guys are! If it gives you a problem, do without it. lol

Some app or the os is trying to access the drive. It might be hard to track down. I would try putting a disk with some files in and see if it generates an error that would give you a clue.

What kind of nerd still has a floppy drive? I suppose if you really wanted to install a DOS game again someday and needed to get that cdrom.sys and mscdex.exe, it could come in handy. 😛

But yes, figure out what's trying to access the floppy. It could be a benign (albeit stupid) program. It could also be something malicious. After you've done that, rip the drive out of the case and stomp on it.

had to have it to install raid drivers at boot. Havent really used it since.

I will disable in the device mgr, cant believe i didnt think about that! DOH

I'd have said "use it to prop up a wobbly table or keep open a door" but yeah Device Manager works too. I have my floppy drive in the case but not connected, just to stop dust getting in where it'd be on the case if I took it out 😛.

My Dell still has a Floppy Drive .. it comes in handy at times
such as for BIOS Flash or to run a Norton Ghost Boot Floppy
... Yes, I know Norton can also boot from the CD

If you through it out can you make sure you aim towards my house? Specifically with the 3007WFP? 😀
