I bought XP at my school bookstore for 15bucks so I need your opinion... i was gonna reformat my hd anyway but now i need to decide if i should put XP on instead of 2K... if i dual boot, can i put XP first then 2K? Or do i need to put 2K first. What are you suggestions...im itching to reformat this baby and start fresh and clean! :)

Bob970 has the best idea. The most logical. Fortunately, I'm a bit more forward. :D

W2K = very stable, time-tested, lots of patches hotfixes already out there. Supports pretty much every piece of hardware/software out there.

XP = brand new, not time-tested, no SPs out yet. Many known issues of unsupported hardware and software.

But if you really want to play, make a 5 GB partition and throw XP on there...make a dual-boot system and have at it.

you can get rid of the "playschool" interface pretty easily...

I had XP installed. While I liked the fact that it booted up really fast. I couldnt deal with the candy apple look and its weird ways to do things. Like I like to have my task bar 2X times the size (I pull it up in other windows os's) but it wont let me do that. Then I like to clear out the "My documents" folder when I want, and the only way I can do that is with tweakui and a reboot. Then there are the software and hardware issues. My tv tuner wont work right, my video editing software woudlnt work... for me that was more than enough to say good bye to XP and say hello to W2K.

I am in W2K now and while it takes longer to boot I do not mind.. its stable as ever (well XP was stable execpt for those damn software stuff that kept hanging).
I would stay with W2K or put XP on a seperate partition.. so you can wipe it if you dont like it.

Edit: I also hated the damn log on interface.I like it to auto log on.. but it wont let me do that if I had more than 1 user id.. and while it brings up the "welcome" screen it would also post my network user id "user" .. I use "user" for local network logon's within the protected network. Ppl shouldnt know that .. or they would have access to the network. I hated that.. While i could always disable the "Welcome" screen and log on manually, there was no auto logon feature in it.
I wish microsoft had kept the candy cane approach + the hard core W2K stuff below so professionals could change it how they wanted it.

man the good guy... took me about a half a second to "pull up" my task bar to twice the normal height.. and it looks EXACTLY like win2k... no special blue GUI stuff... as for your video tuner, i cant help there, but xp has built in video editing software in it...

umm.... just so you know... "looks" does not equate to functionality....heck.. with a little creativity and time you can make a linux box look like win2k... basicaly what im saying is that people aint givin the software a chance... i've had a very good winxp experience... i purchased my first copy and will probably purchase more copies for the rest of my pcs... thats the main reason im using xp and not 2k.. i never legally bought 2k

They did, you can set your interface to classic and tweak the rest of XP so much that it looks exactly like W2K. If you look at my machine it looks just like W2K, desktop, taskbar, icons, logon interface...everything!

My vote is a bit more political: If you go with XP, then you're buying into (and supporting Microsoft's use of) Product Activation.

I have both on different systems and while the look of XP conused me at first OI must say the more I work with it,the more impressed I am particularly with the networking features. I'd partion and go with a dual boot configuration if it were me.

if you check my "Dell technical support sucks" thread I've posted some shots of my laptop's messed up screen showing win xp looking as much like W2K as I could get it to.

yeah.. 777php is correct... and even tho it looks like win2k it still acts like xp... to a point...i've had better luck with stuff working right on xp... btw, product activation is semi-annoying, but only if you dont have an internet connection... 99% of the pc's i'll ever touch for the rest of my life will have internet access within the month needed to activate... it takes literally 2 seconds... and untill it gives me a problem.. which i dont think it will.. i aint complainin at all... microsoft has the right to earn the money for products they make... if you dont like it... learn to program and do better... or depend less on yer pc

If it is an academic edition, it shouldn't have (ours at the UW don't, at least) production activation.

I use XP at home and at work, and love it - some of our other boxes have 2k, and it's fine, but XP has a few more things that I like. Now that I'm used to it, I prefer it.

One system goes down. I have two backups! :)

Hah.. well if you were a pro.. you'd easily figure out that you can make changes... btw, im on XP home edition right now... and even this has all the admin tools that win2k pro has... but im sure you have your event viewer setup perfectly

if you start the install of xp from inside win2k.. there is an option to choose what drive/directory you want to install to.. then when the pc reboots and starts its install there.. you'll get an option.. its pretty simple.. just read along and use common sense..
