I wear my Uncle's field jacket from Vietnam. It fits very loosely everywhere except the shoulders and is reletively light weight.

I have found that having a little bit of air to absord some of the impact seems to work better than a thick sweat shirt and affords me greater freedom of movement in the arms. It's a little bit cooler as well and you can unzip it if you're well hidden.😉

These can be had for >$20 in most Army/Navy stores, however, a camo rain coat would probably work just as well.

Anyway, have fun and protect your sack!

I wore a pair of sweats below my other clothes, that saved me from "most" of the welts.

The other thing is, DONT RUSH IT. At the start of the round everybody runs out like lemmings, and they all get shot. Stay back a little bit and act like they are real bullets and you will do better. (the rushers are the CS players, "I'll respawn, no problem")

I bet you think getting hit by a nerf ball hurts then.

Either dtyn has an extraordinarily high pain threshold or is trying to act like a manly man.

I'd have to agree that it hurts like fvck. Although it depends on where you get hit. The back is very bad.
Stings like a motherfvcker for about 10 minutes. Then aches for awhile and leaves a nasty bruise for a few days to a week.

But to be honest, the pain is part of what makes it more fun. Not that I enjoy pain, but knowing that it will sting really bad gives you an adrenaline rush and makes it so you really are nervous and afraid of getting hit.

Tips: Wear clothes that will blend in with the environment. If you are in the woods, wear green or camo.
Get some anti-fog spray for the goggles.
The first time I went, I was in light grey sweats and a red jacket playing against teenagers in camo. Not good.
And my goggles fogged up so bad that I couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of me. Nothing sucks more than not being able to see the enemy while you are standing out very clearly for them.

I'm not trying to be a "manly man," I've just never found them to hurt. Except when you're on a BYOB field, and people shoot frozen paintballs at 350fps, then I'll say that it hurt, mainly because it doesn't crack open.

Or you're just a pansy.

Unless you get slammed from ten feet off on bare skin, it's more the surprise of *THWACK* and the recognition of "Crap, I'm out" that gets you. The pain definitely isn't lasting.

Don't cheat - follow the field rules as well. And if someone calls out, stop firing at them. It's a waste of ammo and poor sportsmanship to boot.

Heh ... BYOB/Open fields are definitely a whole new ballgame. Frozen balls were grounds for "lifetime ban" from all the fields and arenas I've played in. Most "regular" games I played were limited to 230-280fps, no bringing balls unless you're a field member. "League" rules upped the speeds to the 300s, and "Open" was sort of a mixed bag. On the upside, you could ask that hardcore friend of yours to lend you his 500fps+, ported-barrel semi-auto "sniper rifle" and drill people from halfway across the field. But you had to take into account that the other guys could have the exact same gear. :Q

First of all: it doesn't hurt. I took a shot to my collar bone ~15 feet away and it barely hurt. It'll sting for a bit, but that's it. If you get hit, expect welts.

Secondly, about what to wear, wear baggy dark coloured pants. Wear a dark coloured long sleeve shirt, and a teeshirt over it, or just wear the camos the field supplies. Wear shoes with good ankle support. Wear gloves too, getting hit in the hands isn't fun. Keep in mind, you'll be getting dirty.

Thirdly, here are some tips. Never ever ever shoot OVER your bunker; always shoot from the sides. Video game tactis DO NOT work. Try to flank out the other team if you can. Get some people going straight, keeping the other team busy, while a small group goes off to the side and comes in from side/behind. Get to know your gun. If you know your gun wont shoot that far, don't even bother trying to "lob" shots at them, because chances are the paint won't break. Try to work with your team, and make friends while you're at it. And don't forget to have fun.

Some rules are dead men don't talk. Another words, you can't say anything to your team or the other team after you get hit. Never ever ever ever ever wipe the paint off you when you're hit. If people find out, your next round will be a colourful one.

make sure you dont run into me cuz i'll light your azz up 🙂

Seriously though, just take it easy and have a good time. You aren't gonna be awesome your first time out, just get the feel for it.

DONT get a group of 3 guys you go to every bunker with, as some others have suggested. It's lame and less fun. Don't be worried about the occasional ball flying by your head. If you popped back into your bunker every time a ball flies by you, you'll never eliminate anyone.

When you get to a bunker look out both sides, and think about the best place you can pop out to shoot, mathematically and angular. if you look out 1 side of your bunker and see you're exposed to 9 bunkers and you don't know where the people are in them, and on the other side theres 1 bunker that you saw a guy in, work on the 1 guy first while watching your back.

Don't worry about your clothes. Wear jeans or something that have tough knees that wont rip and you don't mind getting dirty. If i'm in a nervous mood I just hang a Tshirt or towel down my pants to pad the sensitive bits. I've played PB dozens and dozens of time and have neve been hit in the nads, protected or unprotected.

HAVE FUN! And if you're not sure if you were hit or if the ball broke, don't leave the field before you know, and don't shrug it off and keep playing, call for a ref or a nearby teammate to check you.

HAVE FUN!

One thing too.. DO NOT be afraid to get hit.. whenever I bring first timers.. they ALWAYS want to just stay in the bank and are too scared to move forward and getting hit.. keep alert and keep pushing forward.. thats how you win.. and thats what makes it funner.. its ALOT easier and funner to push forward and advance on the other team than to just stay back while multiple people on the other team are advanced on you.. just be smart.. obviously dont run to the next bunker if people have a clean shot on you.. but if you're in a place where you have the opportunity to move up.. do it

oh yea and kneepads are your friend..

also having read over the rest of the thread, while balls may bounce and that hurts more, don't worry about frozen paintballs, no one does that. If you get hit a few times and grow used to the sensation, and one stings extra hard, you can call for a chrono check after the game on the kid, and if he's shooting more than 300fps ask him to be repremanded or the field might sit him for a game.

The field's insurance doesn't allow people to shoot more than 300 feet per second so any decent field is pretty strict about that. Bunker a timmy shooter for me, will ya?

Oh the irony... the anti-gun nut playing paintball. 🙂

hehe, ok, we went and here's my story 🙂

In the first round, I fired about 2 or 3 times cuz I just couldn't shoot on people. I also didn't get hit but I thought I was cuz there was some color. You're only hit if the paint ball splatters on your body. We played in a wood-field. After all, it was pretty good fun until Total Elimination. One guy went crazy and he went after 5 guys, he got hit at least 100 times on his body, legs, etc. but he just didn't walk out. He came after me, I hit him a couple times in the head but he shot me near my sack so I went out, it hurt like a motherfvcker hehe It was pretty funny actually.

But then, after the first two or three games, I realized that I would be the worst soldier EVER. I think war is the worst thing there is. One wrong move and BOOM, you're dead. I weared a pretty thick jacket so the shots didn't hurt at all but it was a Miami Hurricanes jacket(light orange, green and white in a wood play... everyone laughed at me hehe).

And I don't think you can compared it to guns, you really have to be stupid to die in a paintball game 🙂
