I'm gonna buy a completely new computer to replace my old p3 733mhz with geforce2 asus 7700 gfxcard (will never buy asus gfx again, or any other asus product for that matter).

My new system will most probably consist of the latest MSI 875P Fis2 board, Intel P4 2.8C or 3.0C, 1gb ddr400.

Now I only need a good gfx card that will last for a while and that i dont have to upgrade in just a couple of months.
With the recent release of nvidias n35 one can only expect a counterattack from ati etc.. and when the war is over the cards are both better and cheaper. So I was thinking of not buying the best card available now, instead maybe buy an older model that will do the trick while the gfx race is on. And then upgrade in july, august or so.

So what cards is there out there that are good but still pretty cheap that will take me through the summer =)? Games i would like to have running on the cards are battlefield 1942, ascherons call 2, unreal tournament 2003, quake 3 and similar.

TV-out is also pretty much needed.

Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum, but what's your problem with ASUS? I have two v7700 Deluxe in my machines, and the are absolutely great. As far as "what to buy now", depending on the budget, you can get a 4200 or a Radeon 9500 and upwards...

I think it's funny when someone won't buy from a manufacturer. Because they had a problem with something. What happens if another brand has a problem no one's perfect

I first had a 6800 card that had to be returned coz it malfunctioned . I had to wait ages to get it back. I switched to a 7700deluxe, it had issues with the p3v4x motherboard until a fix came several weeks later. The asus mb sometimes gets too hot even though it is within the safetmargins and decide to bring th puter to a halt.

Under the 3 years ive had the gfx card, not once!!, have the asus website been fully functional, and under this time it has gone through 2-3 total revamps. It has always been broken links, drivers that were on the anonymous ftp site (wich i came across just by testing ftp.asus.de and ftp.asus.com.tw btw) were not posted at all on the official website, not until weeks, sometiimes months later especially when it came to the beta drivers.. Just look at the many asus-help sites especially regarding the g2 chip there are, theyre all saying the same thing.. I have several friends thathave similar experiences.. Ok they might do good hardware.. but the horrible support through their website and all the detective work that had to be done to get a decent and recent driver has really been making me think again before buying asus agian, especially when i notice they still have issues with their website.
I dont trust them , i dont like them, they made a really negative impression on me when dealing with their support over both mail and phone, at first they even refused to switch the 6800 until i made them take a look at it again.

The war will never be over. You can play the waiting game forever.
I would go with a DX9 compatible card. ATi or NVidia? What ever suits your budget.

If I were you, I'd just get an 8500 or whatever you can get cheap. Don't expect much out of it for new games but it'll do.

buy a saphire 9700Pro or some 3rd party (read cheap) card Plenty for you and plenty for the future. Untill after Doom3 I bet you'll not need another card. I bet even Doom3 will run decent on the 9700Pro and remember...doom 3 is a singleplayer game so FPS is not a true must have. 30fps SOLID will do fine I bet

Yes, but for the price and what you can get for the same price NO.

In that much, you'll be able to get a 9700 non pro or even a pro, or if not those a 9500 pro definately. You really do get more performance with an ATI based card in that price range.
