It's usually done under a general aneasthetic. But if you're more concerned about homophobia than your health..meh, whatever..

Technically, it is not a general anesthetic. It is considered "monitored anesthesia care" or MAC anesthesia. 99% of the time it is nothing but propofol via IV and careful airway management by your anesthetist.

OK, anal probe complete!

Actually I had scheduled both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy for the same day but didn't know I'd have to have someone sign me out and drive me home because of the meds they give you and I hadn't arranged for someone so I couldn't take the anesthesia.

I opted to go ahead with the anal probe but against the endoscopy without meds and it was not real pleasant, particularly the last turn, but I managed it OK. Turns out I'm clean as a whistle with the exception of some diverticulosis which is not uncommon for my age (58).

Brave dude. Now you can ask you doc to do a prostate exam without the lube.

I make light of this but I think I might be having the old light up the butt exam recommended soon. I've been having having significant GI issues lately. Probably just due to recent antibiotic treatment, but I am 38 and there is some history of colon cancer in my family. Both of those factors point towards having the scope done early rather than late.

Not looking forward to it.
