Well after four different AMD motherboards based on the 266a and the 333, with less than exciting results, i am leaving the good guys and joing the bad guys; on my bed sits the following:
asus p4t533-c
asus p4t533
2 x 1066 rimm (256mb sticks)
3 x 800 rimm (256 mb sticks)

i want stability with the ability to overclock safely. to go with one of these guys i have the 2.53ghz processor. i've read the reviews, i know the pros and cons. i have heard mixed reviews on both. whichever one is champ will sit in my Lian Li with a 400W Antec PSU.
BTW the 1066 memory won't fit in the p4t533; it just has the wrong sized keyhole in the contacts. not sure what's up there but it fits just fine in the -C model.

i ask you all this because i just don't want to go through the work of doing it all up right and then find one is a dog. thoughts or mockings???

No mocking from me ........ I have even considered a P4 system myself, but so far AMD has won out ...... due to budget constraints.
Let us know your general impressions of the new system and ..... if you are satisfied with the performance and stability ..... as compared to AMD and the amount of $$$ spent to get there!

I've had lot's of fun with a K7S5A and an Athlon 1.2G/266 for well over a year, ........ now for an 1800XP+ and a hdd w/8MB cache!
(I'm easily amused)

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that you're best off with DDR if you want to overclock a P4. Anyway, good luck there. :D And if you have Unreal Tournament, would you be interested in doing a simple benchmark and reporting the results:

  • Copy the contents of Unreal Tournament Disc 1 to a folder on your hard drive
  • Using WinZip 8.1 with Maximum compression, make a zip file out of the folder and time how long it takes

Lordy Lordy; loaded up XP on the 533-c, with 3 sticks of 800 and 1 stick of 1066 (i know, i know, bad me, but i wanted to give it a shot). xP pRO took about 25 minutes to fully load up. once it was done and i had all my drivers, i went to to the bios and changed the FSB from the default 133 to 140, figuring that should be a no brainer. and it was; i ran a couple of 3dmark tests. stable, and excellent scores. soooooo, i went back to the bios and went whole hog, all the way up to 150; yep my 2.53 o/c to 2.850 . very stable, if a little hot (45 C). at the FSB of 140 it was at 33 C. i then did the real benchmarks, and played some MoH:AA and Combat Mission at 1600 x 1200. with no lockupsi loved my AMD boards, but i could never ever get them to do the kind of un-modded o/c that everyone else seems to be able to get. and that's on multiple systems, multiple boards, multiple EVRYTHING (including multiple environments). The only exception to that was the Asus A7V266C; that thing would do +10% no prob, without overheating, and be very stable.

i am a happy man

I don't have UT, but i can do the same thing with MOHAA, as it should have roughly the same types of data.
I'll do that tonight

The Asus P4T533 takes 32-bit 232-pin RDRAM (you don't need to use this in pairs). All other i850E boards use the 184-pin RDRAM, which you do need to use in pairs.
