have been playing with overclocking the rig below, yesterday grabbed and installed the water cooler. dropped idle temps 20c, but unable to enjoy this success because machine now locks up fairly quickly. i have noted that at startup the fans drop noticeably in speed when the pump indicator light turns on, then speed back up after the load passes.
also, someone here mentioned that the two 8600's are power hungry, and altho the old seasonic has not failed me to date, i wonder if the pump/fan load is enough to push this over the edge.
so then the question becomes: up the power supply or go to a single vid card of current vintage?
i'd be grateful for anyone's input. thanks zz03

now i see my sig doesn't include the power supply, a seasonic 600w of the same generation as the rest of the stuff...

Temporarily remove one of your video cards and see if it has any positive impact on the symptom.

You could try powering the pump and fans with another psu.

oh,nvm I thought he was saying he thought the pump pulling too much power.

Easiest way to see if it's the power supply or if you are pulling too much juice is to simply remove one of the video cards and try running it like that. :)

Maybe your VRM area isnt getting the same airflow as before?
Couldn't this still be true?

Does the VRM area have anything to do for the video card? And with only one card it does not get hot enough? (I don't know, that is why these are questions)

well, this much i can tell you. the single hottest spot on this mobo is the chip closest to the first pci-e16 slot and turned 45 degrees to everything else on the board. its either the northbridge or the south, i'm not sure. i'm thinking this one needs a fan of its own.

for anyone following this post, the computer is back to normal. its like it needed to accept all this disturbance slowly. i'm now running both vid cards and a 3.0 overclock on the cpu and the temps are in the high 20s low 30s at idle and high 40s running prime95 and all is good. seems strange, but maybe it just needed to ease into it all.

thanks to all who took the time to respond.
