Golfers ... I'm looking for advice about purchasing new clubs...

well I recently got a new job, and now I will have $$$ to get some new clubs 🙂

first I am going to get a new driver, but thats not my quetsion. I have a question about irons. I am wondering if I should try out some irons at the store, then purchase them offline. Reason is because you can find the sets online for about $300-$400 cheaper than in the stores.

but I also want to get my irons fitted to me, so that they are custom fitted. so my main questoin is, should I just get them from a store, where they fit them for me before I even purchase them? or should i try to get them offline, THEN get them fitted for me somewhere? which is the better thing to do, and is it even possible to do the "buy online thing then get em fitted" thing?

I would buy the right fit. Not try and fit the wrong club. The true fitting comes in the lie angle. You need to find the right lie angle for your swing. You could bang the club up or down to change it but thats not the best route. Length and flex of shaft can always be changed later but at a cost. Go to a pro shop and have someone fit you properly. Then find the best price on that set.

by 'fitting' me you mean like which shaft type and flex would be best for me? or do you mean 'fit' me as in the length of the clubs? i'm 5'11, which I would say is a pretty average height. i currently shot low-mid 80's. however, i do feel that my clubs now are a little short. and also, this set was a 12 club set that i got at sports authority for like $170 a few years ago. now that i'm playing more, and hitting pretty well, i want to get some new stuff, because my clubs were a very beginner set i believe.

i have already started w/a new putter and I just LOVE my Nike Blue Chip Putter.

Shaft flex and length is important including material(graphite vs. steel). You have to have someone measure your swing speed to find the best fit for you.
The club lie angle is another fitting aspect. If you tend to hit the ball a certain way all the time (hook or slice) a + or - in lie angle will help that.

You must be a pretty good golfer if you shoot in the mid 80's. Go to a pro shop and get fitted..... Don't make the same mistake I made. I'm 6'5" and have standard length clubs which I got as a Christmas gift. Hitting clubs that have been fitted for me have made a noticable difference. Freegolfinfo.com is a good resource.

Go and get some fitted clubs. Ping has a pretty universal fitting system. You can try out some clubs then buy online. I wouldn't buy anything that you haven't hit on the range at least twice more than one day apart. That way you won't fall in love with something that you were hitting good on a lucky day. Be objective and buy good clubs. It sounds like your game is really improving so you deserve a good set. They can last you a long time if you invest well.

Henery-Griffitts are great custom clubs as well. I know the designer personally (he used to mail my family clubs to demo because my dad is one of the only leftys he knew). I don't know if you are close to a fitter but its worth checking out. A couple of players on tour (Peter Jacobson used to) play them.

I use Pings and love them. Very fogiving but they can abe a bit inconsistant because of it. Update us with results of your search.

edit: Try the ping web fit for starters.

Any good golf shop can adjust the lie and loft angles a few degrees on any clubs. You can buy a stock set and get fitted later. I would be looking at Cleveland TA-7 or Taylor Made RAC irons if I had any money. Pings are good. Callaway is overpriced. My FIL has the titanium hawkeye Callaway's and they are not worth anywhere near what he paid for them.

Do you hit it high or low? Fade or draw? Long or not so long? Do you want to work the ball or just hit it straight?

I think getting a good set of 3 or 4 wedges is really important. I love Cleveland wedges.

thanks for all the replies guys.

LeonarD26: thanks, I am doing pretty well now a days 🙂 My drives have been great some days, and not great some other days. I personally want a new driver BAD as the flex in my club is just ridiculous. I have also gotten alot stronger over the past years, so my swing is faster and therefore the flex bends the club more. it bends more than a 'refular flex graphite' shaft club does. when i was playing this past friday, my partner was shocked at how much it actually bends when i demonstrated it, just by bending it with my hands.

jst0ney: well I personally have a thing for Nike clubs, for a few reasons. first my dad has nike driver and he loves it. he also had the nike blue chip putter, and i went to try it out somewhere and I also loved it as well, so I ordered one. (I am lefty, dad is righty so I can't use his clubs 🙁) He recently purchased the Slingshot Nike irons and is just in love with them as well. as you can see, we have a similiar taste in the clubs we like. I haven't hit them yet, but I am going to start doing tests on iron sets in the near future, as I will have $$$ from this new job to actually purchase em. so right now, I am kind of heading in the Nike direction, but again, it may change once I actually hit them.

laurenlex: yes I think the best thing is to go to a golf shop and just have them fit me. i know of a local shop that is pretty good with that stuff, from what I have heard. right now, I hit my irons relatively straight, but I have been hitting my driver with a mean hook right now, and its frustrating as hell becaus I can't figure out why. last friday, I hit an 85 but I only hit 1 fairway (exluding par 3's), so my iron and short game really came through. If I hit a straight, solid drive, I hit it about 250-270. my 3 iron I hit about 200 yards, and my 5 iron I hit about 175, 7 iron about 150, and my PW I hit about 125ish.

sorry for the long post, but these suggestions are really helpful, thanks guys.

Judging by your height and the way you shoot with the standard lie clubs....the only thing that they can fit now is your shaft flex. Most young people just want to grip it and rip it. So they will just suggest steel. I am 5'8" about 165 and i swing with a stiff shaft on my Nike Pro combos and I use the the standard length and lie and I shoot low 90 to high 80's. Plus I just like the way some clubs feel and some of the Ping's heads are a little too big for me to look at. I like smaller heads not quite forged ones but the smaller cavity backs.

The Cleveland Tour Action 2 are great clubs. We here at the forums can only suggest so many clubs. But you can get fitted and buy them offline. You dont have to buy them from the place you get fitted. But if you get fitted by a good pro at a local shop or course, they might appreciate your business and possibly give you a free lesson or even merchandise from my experience. Sorry about the essay but just wanted to give you an honest opinion

thanks for that 🙂 How do you like your nike pro combo's? i saw a KILLER deal on them at a local store, $400 for the whole set. i was so tempted to put them on my CC but i didn't heh.

and about the way some clubs feel ... i know exactly what you mean. i have had that experience from testing out several drivers. i know alot of people LOVE king cobra drivers, but when I hit one I just did not like the feel. i hit it about 15-20 times.

well all I can say is i LOVE my Pro combos. Since they go from muscle back to cavity for the higher irons, they are forgiving and consistent. I used to work at the drumlins country club in Syracuse and they are an all Nike shop. I got my iorns for 200 since I worked there. I could prolly get you a set for real cheap if you'd like.

I have a Cleveland RTG wedge 53 degree and a 60 degree nike wedge. I hit a 975J 10.5 degree driver and i absolutely love that too. I like the King Cobra but at the same time, I dislike teh size of the new drivers. There is just something about a softball at the end of the club. I would Highly recommend a Titleist 983K or the new Taylor Made R7 which have smaller club heads.

I wholeheartedly concur.

My Cleveland wedges are the part of my set I'll never change if I can help it. I've got the BeNi 60, 56 and 52 degree wedges in my set along with the P-wedge from the full set.

welp I am going to go to a fitter most likely tomorrow, and trying to see if they can help me out with the club sizes I need and specialize em to my needs. thanks guys 🙂
