Golfers .... I would like some recommendations please

I need a good 3W.

I am still using one from a "starter" Dunlop set I began with many years ago. Looking for something forgiving (as forgiving as the game of golf can be of course) and is good for a casual player (I play MAYBE 5 times a year if I am lucky .. would like more though).

I am not a BIG hitter but I can drive the ball with my driver consistently 260-275 yards.

I switched to a Ti Buner 420 about 2 years ago for my driver (again from a Dunlop starter driver) and my drives got longer and straighter and I am much more consistent now (if only the rest of my game would improve LOL). I would like to see similar improvements in going to a decent 3W.

I should mention that I am not rich, don't play enough, and cannot afford to go crazy on some high tech high dollar 3W so please do not tell me to go out and get a $300 3W or anything nuts like that.

I have no problem buying a used club as well so long as its good condition.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Yeah sorry. If got to play 10-15 times a year I could probably justify it but I am very lucky if get to play 5 times a year.

Its such an expensive sport to play that I don't always get to do it. I really enjoy myself though -- even though I suck at it.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will add it to the list to check out.

no worries... x fairway is sick... but not worth it if you only go out 5 times...

the t60 is solid... definitly give it a shot. i am sure you will be able to find one @ secondswing or golfsmith... it will definitly do you justice... just make sure you get a shaft fit for your ss.

drop the 3 wood and buy a 4 wood or 5 wood instead. You probably will hit the 4/5 wood as long as u hit the 3 wood, but you will be much more consistent

Gotcha.

Thanks for the input.

I have been playing with Silver Scots for the last 2 years (again switching from the Dunlop starters) and really like them. I just got some Tommy Armour morphs from the FS/FT forum here at a really cheap price and will try them out this w/e. The things are darn near brand new. I think only 3 or 4 clubs have ball marks on them the rest not even a smudge.

I am looking forward to trying them out. They may not feel any better than the Silver Scots but the guy gave me a great price so I figured what the heck.

I will call some local golf shops as well and see if they may have any old/used 3Ws of this type.

I average only 240-250 yds with a driver, although I did hit a 293-yd drive last Saturday (at least according to the GPS thingy on the golf cart).

easy to hit fairway woods? plenty. for price, go with used. new ones are ridiculously priced. i don't think you can go wrong with a cleveland launcher (titanium for even easier to hit) or the callaway big bertha fairway woods around 2004. Also taylormade's r580 fairways and ping's G2 fairways i've heard are easy to play. All should be around $70-90 on ebay. i also recommend considering a 4 wood if you don't carry a 5.

every one of my clubs in the bag is used except for my driver and i saved a damned bundle.

i sometimes wish i did that... somedays i hit nice with my driver... but the days that i dont... i leave it in the bag and just use my 3 and 5 woods off the deck.

Thanks I will look into those as well.

Believe me the only reason I carry the driver I have is I got it for a steal ... (slight brag here)... 2 years ago I was getting some groceries at the local BJs (ya know milk, diapers, tp etc) and stumbled on their ahem "golf selection" if you can call it that. Found this club Ti Burner 420 .. no price, no sign, no tags, no packaging, no head cover .. nothing.

Out of curiosity I took it up front to see what the price was (I knew it was expensive because of the name) and the manager spent 30 mins looking this up and couldn't find it so he said I could have for whatever the cheapest club was in their system...... $25.00.

I said sold and ran with it and my milk, diapers etc right out the front door.

The reason I use it almost all the time is I am not a BIG hitter and the course I play all the time is pretty open. I also hit this club better than my crappy 3W or my 5W so even on holes where I don't need the "whoopin' stick" I use it anyway and just reduce my swing some. Works out well but not always which is why the need for a better 3W is where I am headed.

I will add those to the list to check out.

Thanks

Greg

If you wanna try something cheap/easy, you can go down to WalMart and get one of those Hybrid clubs.........

(You could also do high-dollar, but for $20 at Wal Mart it's hard to go wrong and you could always see if you even like that whole "hybrid" thing or if you're more a "conventional" wood kinda' guy first)

They have like 19', 20', 22' IIRC. I'd been told to keep it *under* 20' for a hybrid, but I also use an 8' driver........(I'm 6'2" so I strike 'down' on the ball pretty hard & can even get my 8' driver to launch w/ some serious height so I need anything I can to keep my woods down).

I'll be trying one of the Wal Mart clubs myself (if I don't get something for my birthday here in a couple weeks).

My problem right now is that I hit my 3-iron, 4-iron and 5-iron all about the same distance.....(200-215) so I typically find myself either using driver off the fairway or 5-iron. I've had a VERY hard time finding something good in-between. I'm seriously thinking 'hybrid' for myself & using it more like an iron & see if I can get something to fill that 225-250 range.

Good thought. I have used my brother-in-law's Taylor Made Rescue club before (about 3 times maybe) and thought it was "ok". With more swings it might be a good choice but overall I am more of a standard wood guy 😉.

My big problem tends to be getting UNDER the ball. With the exception my driver I constantly seem to be hitting worm burners. I don't normally "pop-fly" things at all. I actually had trouble with the Burner 420 in the beginning because I couldn't tee the ball up high enough until I got slightly longer tees now its dam purdy when she goes (its a 10.5 as I recall).

$20 certainly is worth a shot and definitely won't break the bank.

One thing I read about the nike t60s suggested first is A LOT of folks that reviewed the club are using a steel shaft vs. graphite. I've always used graphite shafted woods never steel and used steel irons never graphite. I never really thought of trying a steel shafted wood before .. maybe worth a shot too ... hmmm....

Thanks

Greg

I have Titleist irons and a x460 tour driver. I hit the ball well and long (most of the time). But I also dont need to spend my money on a 3wd since it is used seldomly in a round. So what I did was have a friend make me a knock off. Its very cheap and for the amount of usage its perfect. He made me a copy some 7-8 years ago and its still going strong. I believe its a tight lies knock off so that should tell you how old it is.

If you can't strike it "cleanly" (like sweeping it off the fairway) try hitting down on it, like one does with the short irons. That'll get it up quickly with some backspin and it'll stop nicley as well..

If you've watched some of the pro's lately (Tiger Woods is a good example) they're hitting down on the 3w's, even off the tee. Even the commentators were talking about Tiger's divot's off the tee in his last tournament.

Thanks .. sounds like its time to go the range and practice .. 😀
