How did Jay Osmon, an assistant pro at Cattails GC in Alamosa, Colo., shoot a 15-under-par 56 there on Sept. 5? He lipped out a 25-foot eagle putt at 18 for 55.

Yes, Osmon played that well, if not better (he missed a four-foot putt on the third hole), and was almost apologetic for having done so, inasmuch as he was playing from the blue tees, which measure about 6,000 yards.

Still, it was a memorable round for Osmon, 30, who is preparing for the pre-qualifying stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., next week.

Why would a scratch golfer not play from the back tees, especially considering that the golf course is located in the mountains? Nevertheless, 15-under par is insane.

Higest of lows: Colorado assistant pro shoots 56

I don't understand the significance of the blue tees (where do pros swing from and what's the difference between pro tees and blue tees?)

I always swing from the girly/jr. tees, and I'm still +20.

Look at the score card on that site

http://www.golfcolorado.com/li...cattails-frameset.html

You can see that there are black, blue, green, and red tees. The black being the longest at 6517 yards total.

The web site says that the course from the back tees (black in this case) measures 6517 yards.

I always thought there was a standard for tee colors.

But I've noticed, as I've golfed more, that it seems to be up to the course to set the colors.

On the course I learned to golf on... the "Championship" tees were blue.

On the last course I played... the "Championship" tees were gold (yellow).

Edit:

BTW: I'm happy when I break 60 for 9 holes... lol :)

You can't just walk up to the PGA and say let me play. There's a qualifying/school process. He's trying to qualify.

Resident: 9 Holes $15, 18 Holes $20 9 Holes $20, 18 Holes $30 - its not like this course is something spectacular. Its a par 71 POS. Big deal.

That's quite obviously a paddycake course. 6000 yards in Colorado is like 5400 at sea level and even junior girls play longer setups than that. The course rating is 69 which is insanely low on a par 71. There's no doubt that he's hitting middle irons into the par 5's and wedge or less into every par 4. Still, shooting 56 is crazy. Even with a wedge in your hand on every hole you've still got to make just about every putt.

I have to question why he wasn't playing from the tips. On a course that short and easy it's probably only a stroke or two difference max, but he's a pro and it's a kiddie layout. Why the heck would he move up a tee set? An amazing round, now let's see what he does in Q school on a real golf course.

Looking at the clubs scorecard if he was a big hitter and the right wind he could of drove at least 4 of the par 4's. All the pars 5's he was in with 2 easily. All that coupled with easy pin placements and elevation probably made it happen. This was an awesome score no doubt, but with golf technology these days it was bound to happen and will happen a lot more. I couldn't do it in a million years though LOL.

There was a nationwide tourny in Utah last week where 2 of the longest hitters avereaged 350 and 360 yardsoff the tee.

He could HAVE driven 7 of them if he was an above average hitter.

I agree that it's a short/easy course. But we don't know what trees may be involved. Still a great score. It'd be good to see his actual score card. Driving 7 par 4s is like taking 7 off from the start depending on the hole/conditions and his short game.

Drive clost to the green, nice chip, gimme birdie putt.

There's a picture of the course on the site and a scorecard layout map. Trees are not an issue. Several of those holes are very short and are wide open doglegs. If a par 4 is playing 315 with a sharp dogleg and no trees at that altitude it might play as little 230 or 240. I play par 3's longer than that at sea level. Not only was he driving the green on a lot of the holes, he was likely hitting an iron on several of them.

Same reason every Joe-Schmoe who bowls a 300 in his Tuesday night league isn't on the PBA tour.
That was a very easy course he played. 56 is still a fantastic score, but likely it's just that he caught lightning in a bottle that day. He'll never repeat that performance again.

As mentioned before, let's see what he shoots on a real course.
