Does anyone play here? How hard is it to pick up? If I have very little upper arm strength (heheh), is it stupid for me to even try and pick it up? Where do I begin?

Start by trying to find a friend that plays and heading to the driving range. Hit some balls to get comfortable with the form. The finer techniques will follow. Either that or get lessons. A buddy of mine is teaching me how to play and I just had my first lesson today.

I've only been to the driving range on occasion; but golf isn't about brute strength, but rather technique.

There are a lot of young teens that could out-drive many adults. And then there's Michelle Wie, the 6-foot tall 13 year old teenage girl who wants to play half-time on the PGA Tour. :Q

It's not so hard if you do it consistently, I play quite often with friends and while I'm not great I do get better every time I play. It's one of those games where every bit of practice counts, like others have said in this thread, it's all about form. Start at the driving range for sure, once you can smack a ball with a little confidence in your swing actually making contact with the ball your on your way :p.

I play a little golf...and you don't really need a strong upper body to play. It does however have everything to do with swing! If you don't swing properly you have tons of problems!

I'd get proffessional lessons as then you are learning correct form from the beginning. Definitely start at the driving range, and don't worry how far you hit the ball, worry about how straight!

As my fiance says, "Ya I hit the ball long, but all that means is I have to go deeper into the woods to find my ball!"

Have fun!:)

Do you have any pitch & putt's in your area? Loads of fun :D no hole longer than 120 yards. Great way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Give those a try first :D

If you can afford it buy a set of irons (3 through sand wedge), one driver, and one putter. If not just rent some decent clubs from your driving range?s Pro Shop. Once you've got all your clubs, buy a bucket of balls at the driving range and hack away. After a little while of hacking you'll get a feel for your natural swing and eventually will be able to comfortably hit the ball. I wouldn't play an entire 18 (or even 9) until you've been to a driving range at least a few times, since consistent practice is absolutely necessary to play well on a 9 or 18-hole golf course, especially if you?re a beginner.

If you're like most people and can't find the time (or desire) to practice consistently then you should at least hit a bucket of 30 balls or more before you go out onto the course. After playing four years of high school golf I can say that practicing just before teeing off helped my confidence on the course more than anything else.

Golf is probably one of the easiest games I've ever played, I don't know why other people have had problems with it.

It takes practice but if you want to be good, do NOT start at the driving range. Start with putting and chiping. The short game is definately more important than driving (as you only drive once per hole, maybe twice if it's a par 5 or if you mis hit it).

The driving range is much more fun though so may be hard to keep interest with just the short game stuff. As far as lessons go, find a friend who's semi decent and mooch off them for a little bit. After a few lessons it's good to just do it by yourself and practice.

And strength has nothing to do with it either. My 80 year old grandma beat me every time (and I mean EVERY) up until the very last time we played. Keep in mind that I can drive a ball 250 yards and that I don't suck, she's just good!
