i was at the range and a group of 3 men were talking between shots. a dude from about 30 feet away gets real agitated and tell them to keep it down. the group of men take offense and tell him to shut the hell up. agitated-guy storms out vowing to talk to the manager. pretty funny sight.

i'm a golf n00b, so i don't know driving range common courtesies. i'm aware that on the course everyone is quiet. what about at the driving range?

I've never seen anyone get mad at the driving range like that.
Personally, it's the range, it's not competition, why should everyone be quiet?

i would say if you are talking at a reasonable level its fine, especially if its about the swing or about golf...but if you are yelling and carrying on i could see it get real annoying to others real fast

well, the agitated-guy clearly had rage issues. his girlfriend was trying to calm him down to no avail.

of course you can talk, but dont be too loud..

usually driving ranges are noisy, people hitting balls, shanking, cars, etc etc

Usually the driving range is full of noise and distractions (batting cages, go-karts, kids playing mini-golf, etc) and people chatting and what not. This isn't the freakin' PGA and if you're good enough to be in the PGA then you probably aren't whacking balls off a rubber mat like the rest of us plebes.

In short, that guy sucks. I think you should try to keep it down, but if you want silence, go to the library.

hardcore etiquette - be quiet
real etiquette - just don't be an ass

It'd take a reallly stuck up person to call you on talking at a range.

<--- not a golfer, but I would think a keeping it down would be respectful. Think golf clap...

yeah i'd have to agree, sounds like the dude has issues beyond his shanking golf balls. usually when i go to the range it's with my dad or brothers and we usually chat while we hit balls. it tends to be a noisy place anyhow, y'know, with all those people hitting range balls.

On ranges almost anything goes. Just use common sense, don't act differently on the range than you would in a supermarket or restaurant. Talking is fine, avoid screaming, boomboxes and checking yourself for intestinal polyps. In this case the guy who got mad was wrong.

btw, about 20 minutes later (after most had left) a dad comes in with his two daughters (around 8-10 yrs old). he was teaching them to play golf and cheering loudly everytime they hit the ball. more people left, muttering under their breath about it being too loud. when i looked up, it was only me and him in the area :p

so much drama at the driving range...

Talking at the driving range I have no problem with.

However, the other day I did get severely agitated at the range. Some fool driving by saw his friend out on the range and decided to stop his car and talk to him. No problem. However, this fool had five of his kids in the car all of whom appeared to be below the age of ten. He expected the eldest child to watch over the rest, which of course is completely ridiculous. So the kids are running around screaming and playing with the water cooler, so the dad starts screaming that they are going to get spanked, but of course they are children so being unsupervised they can't help but make noise and be crazy. So this goes on for about twenty minutes until finally the friend that the guy stopped his car to see pretty much tells him to blow off.

Rant over. :p

hahah something tells me that guy would be a complete asshole during a round....

my theory is that you should be able to concentrate through all sorts of crap, including but not limited to:

fart noises
burp noises
pissing noises
irritating friend noises
drink cart noises
drink cart girl noises
irritating nature noises (e.g., bird's chirping, dogs barking)
car noises

;)

The guy probably can't break 120 on a good day anyways.

How are golf teachers supposed to teach if they can't even talk on the range? That guy was a dork.

My friend and I talk on the range and purposely try to spook each other. That way, you get use to playing while people talk, because one day, you're gonna get paired up with an idiot, loudmouth, and/or drunk and you can't leave the group, because the course is full.

Funniest thing I've seen on a golf range was a guy getting hit by a golf ball on his behind from the guy behind him... damn that's a powerful shank.

I almost put a golf ball up a guy's tailpipe once. I pretended it wasn't me. :D

you can talk, just don't do what some guys did last time I was there. They came into the range and were talking pretty loudly, which wasn't a problem, but every other word was a cuss word. A couple of the parents had their little kid with them and they got real mad real fast.

My friends and I play that game sometimes, especially if we go out for 9 holes before dark for a quick practice. There are 2 ways to play, the first in unlimited verbal interference where you can talk, yell, burp, drop your bag or anything else noisy at any point during any swing. The other is that you have a set number of times you can mess with another player. In a 4-some we go 2 attacks on every player by every player, so each guy is open to a total of 6 attacks during the round. The 2nd way is harder. In a regular game you're prepared for silence, so any noise bothers you. In the first way you're prepared for guys to yell during every swing and you mentally steel yourself to block it out. It's amazing, but if you know the noise is coming a guy could set off a bomb during your swing and it doesn't have much effect. The limited interruptions way is a real bitch though. When you're over the ball you're left wondering if something is going to happen and the uncertainty is a killer. You ca prepare for silence and you can prepare for noise, but you can't be prepared for both at the same time. The more important the shot the more the guy thinks that you're going to mess with him. When you don't he can actually flinch from the silence and screw up worse than he would if you yelled.
