Gold is not toxic, in fact it is becoming more common for people to use gold foil for fancy foodstuffs; gold covered cherries, etc. Gold is one of the few metals out there that is non-reactive with just about everything; hence why they use it in spacecrafts, dental fillings, and why some people can wear 24k gold but not other metals.

It's funny b/c just this weekend my fiancee was telling me how she got sick after she drank a bunch of goldschlager followed by various and sundry other beverages, and blamed the 'schlager for making her sick b/c the gold flakes sped the absorption of alcohol so much.

That was the first I ever heard that little urban legend. I don't believe it. My freshman year in college, I drank 7 shots of 'schlager and I didn't feel any drunker any faster than I did when I drank 7 shots of some other liquor.

If you strained out all the gold from GS that you served for the rest of your life, you might have a couple of grams. IIRC, there's some restaurant that covers some dish or drink that they serve with gold foil. There's a huge piece of gold foil, but incredibly incredibly thin. They showed how they pounded the foil between 2 layers, then split the layers into 1x1 pieces, and pounded them until they were big, then split them again and so on and so on, until they couldn't get it any thinner.
