So now, Walton finds himself in a somewhat enviable but weird position. He has coached a team to a 20-0 start, something no other person has done in NBA history. Even if Golden State played .500 basketball the rest of the way, it would still finish 51-31, so you could reasonably say the Warriors have now clinched a playoff spot 20 games into the season.

His definition of "clinched" is even more lameass than your spelling of "berth".

History tells us that winning 50 games in the West does not automatically equal a trip to the playoffs, but you could get into the East playoffs even with a losing record. This year though a number of teams are under performing, so it might actually be the case for once.

History...but didn`t the NBA change how you get into the play offs??

If they clinched a playoff berth, then that means that they can lose the rest of their games and it will only affect seeding.

So can 20-62 put you in the post season?

There is a whole sociology study about this and competition dating back to the beginning of man. Overall, it's amazing how much money someone can make today wearing shorts and a tank top.

IIRC, the only thing they changed was seeding. The top 8 teams from each conference get into the playoffs and seeding is now based solely on record. Division titles no longer matter.
