Golden Sample Ti4200 vs 9200se

I have the oppurtunity to upgrade very cheap and was just wondering what kind of performance gains i can expect if any. I plan to overlock the GS to the max as the person installed extra heatsinks and cooling.

Yea that is probably the max I would pay for it. I know its stupid but i just hate dumping money on vid cards, would rather buy and sell constantly... keeps things interested. Ive just heard so many good things about golden samples and the Ti series Id atleast like to give it a run and see how bad it makes my 9200se look. Although the 9200se makes itself look bad all on its own.

"Golden Sample" = Gainward?

If so, I have to share my bad and only experience with Gainward. Bought a ti4200 golden sample card a few years ago and it did fine for a while. It was an upgrade from a gf2 pro and it was a great performance boost. Then, in the middle of games (RTCW), my PC would lock up and my screen would look like a flashing quilt. I tried every possible fix - drivers, PS, vid settings, even wiped the hard drive and started from scratch. Nothing worked and I could get no recourse or help from Gainward. I finally found some info that some of these cards had a bad capacitor but by that time, I was well out of the warranty, card wasn't even sold much any more, so I was out the $150 I spent.

Maybe a very rare case, but I lived it, so no more Gainward for me.

my gainward gs didnt overclock as well as i expected it to since it was a "gold sample"

other than that, yeah everyone else has said it already, it blows the 9200 away, esp the se

Using the Aquamark3 demo i just scored a 870 on my gpu withe 9200se, and thats overclocking it 50mhz each way, and that only brings me up from a 864 stock.... how can a card be so bad? Im hoping for some great performance out of the GS, the seller claims it does 290/595 oc, im sure stock it will be a good upgrade and have real high hopes after hearin the oc numbers on it.

I've got a GeForce 4 Ti 4800SE from Gainward. The stock coolers on both of my 4600's(4800 is an 8xAGP version of the 4600) will die after a bout a year or two in my experiance. I didn't bother with trying to get an RMA for it, and replaced it with an after market solution. It's been working wonderfully dispite it.

When I noticed this one died, I smelled a burning plastic kind of smell while playing CS:S. After about an hour, I started to get worried my dad had burnt something in the kitchen. It wasn't so. I checked my power supplies first, then started checking fans. Twas the HSF on the 4800. Ah well. Now it's got a copper heat sink with AS5 instead of the aluminum one with whatever gunk they used.

Go go for the 4200. They OC well, and are great cards even at stock speeds.

more like, how can a 6800 Ultra be so good 😉
ti 4200 is a damn nice card, esp for the price. ovbiously it gets slaughtered compared to ANY card from the 6600/9600 and up, but its pretty old.

trying to stay in the $50-$75 range. friend has a bfg fx5500 256mb OC card and is tryin to convince me to get one. but from what i read on here it seems a ti4200 or ti4600 for the price may be the best although would be used.

i think the ti 4600 would be faster then the fx 5500, but it wouldnt be dx9. dont quote me on that though.
how many/what kind of games do you play?

Don't get a 5500. No FX5xxx is worth getting now. Either get the ti4200 for cheap or step up to a 6600gt. The difference between a ti4200 and a ti4600 is pretty much nil.

I mainly play CS:S, other than that i might mix in some (laugh now) Starcraft. Down the road possibly Doom3, not looking for maxed out everything, just a good budget card, and definetly a upgrade from the 9200se.
