looking for inexpensive but good HS/F for overclocked AMD 1600 (not pushing cpu to its limit).

Read good comments about the SVC GC68 (great for its price). But for $4 more the Gate 40 has a higher rating upto a 2100 where as GC68 only upto +1800.

Questions:

1) any experince with the Gate 40 ? Does it have a high polished contact like the GC68

2) will the use of a good thermal grease like Arctic Silver III rather they the standard grease that comes with the HS/F significantly improve heat transfer ?

thanks

PS - cant see spending $30 for a $55 cpu

The Golden Gate 40 is one of the highest quality copper coolers on the market. Includes 40CFM YS-Tech Fan and thermal grease.

i think the biggest difference is the goldgate uses a 60mm fan, it pushes more air but is a lot louder. gc68 has a 80mm 32 cfm(i think) fan. but doesn't make a lot of noise. if you want more air flow, I would get the gc68 with a higher cfm fan, perhaps the adjustable ystech.

ps. as3 def. is better than goop. and I didn't see myself spending 30 bucks for a hsf for a 55 dollar cpu either, but I ended up spending about 60. doh! oh well, I love my swifty, and my room is hot like crazy.

Get the GC68. I use it on my XP2000 with max temps of 55 and it's extremely quiet:)

Lol, high polished contact like the GC68. Read some of the other threads, the orginal authors will disagree with you.

First, definitely get AS3. It is worth its price. Second, I think GC68 is a pretty decent HSF. Last, if you plan to seriously overclock, you will dish out the dough.

The gc68 isn't an overclockers' hsf, just a nice quiet alternative to the stock unit for xp1600-1800 cpu's, maybe higher. The price is nice, too.

For what you want, a Taisol 760092 with Delta or Sunon fan from KDComputers (for example) would be a good choice. Not terrible loud, but a solid performer. They used to ship all Taisols with the stock fan included, too. If you want quiet overclocking, you'll have to give up some $$. Might be better to just buy an xp1800 and a gc68, call it good....
