I assume they'll speak more to that guy's back cortisone (?) injection. He's on the crew but I don't think they went into depth on how his back feels compared to prior.
Looks like he's moving just fine to me.

Seems like a yearly cortisone injection will be a life saver. :)

I was hoping they would completely fill in the glory hole to make it that much harder on asshole Fred, he's lucky it's all part of a show other wise they could kill his ass, bury him 20 feet deep with the 400 and drive his truck hundreds of miles away, abandon it and claim they never saw his ass..

First they should run his ass thru the wash plant, to make sure he's not holding any gold.

Damn you I was going to say the exact same thing. He must have at least one gold tooth...

Fred's "very good news" to the team is that he owns the claim. What an a55hole--the way he told them. Business wise I don't think he did anything wrong even, especially if he really had been trying to buy it for years. And in their first hour (?) of work they actually got $1200 in gold I think.

Todd totally fvcked this up, though, epic mismanagement, to actually let this situation happen legally that they could blow all that time working and then not be locked into the claim. He must feel like crap.

That dude from Texas who was going to invest and then pulled out made the obvious right choice.

If not for the bears they could have fed Fred to the bears.

Wash plant, LOL..I'm sure he pressed the claim holder even more after the disappointing take from the previous summer all the while knowing the tough work, finding the glory hole had already been done..

As to how they came up with the money: Would the Discovery Channel really not find a way to funnel $250K or whatever it is to keep the supposed #1 show on air? Makes sense they would ensure that the crew finds the funds regardless, maybe they underwrite the airport leases or loans or whatever.

Inspections by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration Aug. 4 to 8 (2011) resulted in a total of 13 citations and two compliance orders against John Schnabel's Big Nugget Mine and the Jim Nail Placer Mine operated by "Dakota" Fred Hurt, according to a website maintained by the agency.

Dakota Fred is a real A-hole if that is how it really went down. My thinking is they had 2 places to mine and the easy way to make it work was to let Dakota Fred take the glory hole and the crew would head to Klondike. I think this is all being driven by the show and the direction they want them to take. I really want to believe that what is being played out on screen is what is really happening because it is one hell of an entertaining show.

I love this show, I just wait for what idiotic thing they will do next. They are a group of total idiots and with what they are doing don't deserve to make any money.

they had a second mine but before they headed to AK Todd got word that the US Mine dept or what ever its called did not grant them water rights. so without water their second mine was not going to happen.

Discovery has [wisely] hedged their bets. They saw the Hoffman "experiment" facing the potential of crashing, so they've branched out to that 16 year old at porcupine running the big nugget mine and dakota fred. It's really a shame we couldn't see the hoffmans back at porcupine creek, though.

Hoffan continues to display his ineptness at all this. When asked by his crew why they should go to the new claim it was basically "I have a great feeling about it, in my gut".

Now the Hoffman crew has taken what appears to my stupid eyes (granted, I lack the potent miner's intuition) to basically be a piece of Canadian wilderness and they'll start "mining". I do wish them luck, though.

It was fun to watch and a good example of why you shouldn't risk everything to go do something you had no experience with. That was the biggest thing that struck me about the show, "hey lets risk everything we own to go do something we have never done before"

The old man on the show annoys me to no end, I would have given him the boot no matter who's dad he was. Dakota Fred is an ass and it isn't the discovery channel editing making him appear that way, you can tell his character by just the responses he gives to questions and his general attitude towards others. Any real man would have gone to the Hoffman's and told them about what he planned to do , sneaking in and basically stealing it is something that banks and corporation do .

He is an ass, but you know if we had to choose to mine gold with him or Hoffman I think it's clear who we'd pick!

You're right, this show shows what can happen when you go all in. That's ok at a Casino with a set limit but these guys have cashed out everything. It seems the reward (substantial wealth) is not as good as the highly possible loss (losing everything they have).
I would have and done it with cement.
Or landmines.

Just all setup to make interesting TV. If he had done something like that in real life, I have a sneaking suspicion that he and his truck would have been at the bottom of a new glory hole, never to be seen again.
