"Bites from this species have caused human fatalities. In fact the Eastern Brown Snake accounts for more fatalities than any other Australian Snake. A nervous, ready biter it will defend itself if threatened. Maintains a strong defensive "S" shaped posture. The second most toxic land snake in the world and the most venomous in South East Queensland. Bites from this species should be treated immediately and attended to with correct first aid."

Not really something you want slithering around your kids bedroom.

As a sideline, I find it fascinating that a fear of snakes in baked into many mammalian species genes as you can observe, for example, by cats reacting to cucumbers.

It is fascinating considering how limited snakes are. They can't move very fast, they can't jump, and if it gets cold, they're helpless.

How do the cucumbers react to cats?

Australia...where there are more snakes, insects, sharks and crocs that want to kill you/eat you than any other place on the planet...

Some of them are fast, aggressive, and (before modern antivenoms) pretty much 100% deadly if they bite you.

Well yeah, but this is also "Welcome to Australia, a beautiful land where everything wants to kill you".

That is true! :D

I was talking more about the "baked into many mammalian species genes" thing though. I'm guessing that those sorts of instincts got set before we left Africa.

I'm a mutant I suppose. When I see a snake I see a lithe and elegant creature and I have no visceral fear reaction. That does not mean I do not understand that some are inherently dangerous if tangled with, but that's an acknowledgment of fact. On the other hand if I were in Australia... :D

I'm ok with them, I'd probably be less calm if I saw a large one in my child's nursery or if one was in my sleeping bag when camping!

I'm not sure if I'd be less worried in Australia or not. I'd assume that the deadly spiders would kill the snake before it got me!
