Going with a superzoom for my every day lens

Been thinking about this for awhile and finally pulled the trigger, with the approval from the wife first of course.🙂 Got a super zoom (24-240mm) and selling all of my old A-mount lenses, many of them overlapping in focal lengths. They were good lenses back in the day but even a modern super zoom can probably out perform them now. My legacy MF primes should hold me til I save up some more for a good AF prime. I'll see if I can post up some pics from this weekend when I get it.

Haven't had a chance to get out and do some real world shooting but did some testing against the old Minoltas. As I suspected the 24-240 outperformed all 4 zooms (28-105, 28-135, 70-210, and 75-300. The 75-300 was surprisingly quite close in sharpness but had horrible CA. Purple everywhere. The only time the other lenses came close in sharpness was f/8 and f/11. Colors were much better and better WB accuracy if there is such a thing on the 24-240.

I was never overly critical of the Minoltas but I think with the improvements I'm going to be more than happy with the new lens.

What body do you have? (A Sony of somesort... just trying to figure out if crop or FF. 24 on crop would be sorta zoomed.)

It's the first a7, so yes 24 on a crop wouldn't be wide enough. I was contemplating the 24-70 f4 but felt the tele end was too short to be my only lens even though it was probably better optically. Just some of the compromises we gotta live with.

My 24-120 is by far my most used lens, and I would feel claustrophobic if it ended at 70mm.

I think your choice is a good one.
