Going to Virginia on vacation from August 5th-12th, mostly just to see the sites. Will be staying in Williamsburg, but will be traveling across the state, checking out a lot of history.

So...Virginia ATOT residents...while I'm up there, where can I find some decent beer? :p
Any good places for a drink, perhaps local stuff I can't get further down south (Florida). Let me know. Thanks.

Are you open up to the WHOLE state? You should make a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway and/or Skyline Drive (I prefer the BRP). Near the northern end of the BRP, north of Lynchburg, south of Charlottesville is an awesome brewery in the mountains called Devil's Backbone. They serve German style beer - lagers, pilsners, and weissbiers. Fantastic weissbier.

If you are up around Nova/DC, there is Port City Brewery in Alexandria, you can take tours of the brewery there. Sweetwater Tavern is another great restaurant/brewhouse, they have at least two locations, one in Merrifield near the Beltway and route 50, one out in Centreville where 28 and 29 meet.

If you like hoppy bears there are a few Dogfish Head brewery/restaurants around. They started in Delaware but haven't spread too far around the northeast yet. I'm not a big fan of hoppy IPA's and the like, but people who are, love Dogfish Head.

@Triumph - Yep, open up to the whole state. We'll be traveling all over it. I'll see if I can check out the brewery and BRP, that's not too far a trip and might be pretty nice.

@zzuupp - Thanks! That's right where I'll be staying. Looks like a nice place, I'll check it out for sure.

Bump for the afternoon crowd. Also willing to entertain ideas of what to do up there. We're looking for stuff related to history and/or nature. It doesn't have to be about beer, but I do want to have some good local brews while up there :p

If it's not far out of your way, definitely go see Luray Caverns.

edit: I'm not from Virginia...I just remember going there on vacation when I was a kid. After google'n, it looks like Luray is a 3.5 hour drive from Williamsburg where you're staying...7 hours round trip is a whole lot of driving. But those caverns are incredible...so maybe if there's anything else near Luray that you want to see...

Busch Gardens--Oh YEAH!

well, kidding about the good beer, part...but Busch Gardens is one happy awesome place. (contrary to popular belief, Busch Gardens is actually the happiest place on earth, and not Disney Land.)

@seepy83 - Well, Triumph recommended I travel the BRP and head north from there to Devil's Backbone Brewing. That's only about an hourish south of the Luray Caverns. We could potentially make a day of it, and see some of the national forests on that side as well. Could work.

@mb - Sounds cool. zzuupp recommended I go to greenleafe, and I see that they carry some Legend beers, so I'll be sure to pick some up.

Thanks!

Yeah that's probably a good idea. You can get Legend beers here in most grocery stores even.

So if their porter kicks ass, I'll head on over to a grocery and pick up a couple 6 packs. Fuck yeah.

Also. 40oz's. Can't get them in Florida. God damn Florida :(

*Edit*
Located the closest Total Wine. Now I'm set haha.

I was in Jax 2 weeks ago and I must say, that area is absolute shit for beer.

Though, I might be spoiled.

My brother lives in Vienna and he swears by Dogfish Head. It's half dog, half fish, and half head!

If you are interested in history, Virginia is chock full of Civil War history, probably more so than any other state. Antietem, Appomatox Courthouse, 1st and 2nd Bull Run, Battle of Richmond, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, etc.

Luray Caverns is very impressive, as is the Natural Bridge.

Thomas Jefferson's estate at Monticello is nice, as is James Madison's estate at Montpelier. GW's estate is up in northern virginia at Mount Vernon.

I wish I was rich. Theres a lot of nice places to be in Virginia but you need money.
Actually if I had money I wouldnt stay in Virginia. I would go to the country in Oregon and live just south of Eugene, out in the hills. Nice stuff there.
