The wife and I are going to St. Thomas island and plan to stay here:

Mariott Frenchman's Reef

Any advice, like should I rent a car, any places I should see, any places not to bother with...etc.

Thanks to everyone!!

EDIT: fixed my stupid link to Priceline. Now directly links to resort.

Anyone know if I need a passport or immunizations, etc.?

I don't think so, but hoping some one would know.

Take a quick boat ride to St. John. There's a reef near Trunk Bay that is a national park and has awesome snorkeling.

Definitely take a day trip over to St John's...it's absolutely beautiful. Small pic from a high point on the island.

A day shopping in Charlotte Amalie is pretty fun. You'll get assaulted by barkers all day trying to get you into their stores, but you can get some good deals on certain things since the shopping is duty-free.

If you want to blow a little $ on a nice dinner, the Hotel 1829 is very nice.

For some local color, you have to have a drink (or five) at Duffy's Love Shack in Red Hook. Very funky open-air bar with some obnoxiously strong drinks. :D

Why would you need a passport to go from the United States to the United States?

I went there in the begining of march. They will give you a hard time if you dont have your passport, but the law is on your side if you are an american citizen- they cant keep you from "reentering your country" if you never left. Cruzan rum is one of the locals and it kicks A**. Be prepared to taxi a lot if you want to get away from your resort... and like all touristy things, its expensive as all get out. 12$ for 2 miles I remember the one fare being to and from redhook. Don't think you're walking anywhere tho. All of the taxis are giant 14 passenger vans with plaquards that say 21. They do 50 on their 35 mile an hour roads... 90% of their non urban roads are like wide driveways that everyone does 50 on.... walking is out of the question

immunizations are not necessary and the locals are punks unless they stand to get paid by you. Don't take the ferry to St. John between 2 and 4. The school hour rush is killer, but when you do go to Red Hook to take that ferry, make sure you hit the icecream shop in there. Its expensive but good. Nice island but Id never go back. Dont go to the same restaraunts twice and be prepared for 80-90$ a day food bills. any other questions just post. Oh, and the only beer on the island is Heineken, Bud light and the local brews. Gas is 2.90$. Everyone has rims, but never a complete set b/c the rest are on layaway.

Unless you really hate being at the mercy of the taxis or you enjoy driving with new york style crazies, i'd forget renting a car- but thats just me personally.

Edit: the icecream shop is across the street from the duffys inn or whatever mentioned above in Red Hook

A friend just got back from St John a month or so ago... she HIGHLY recommends bug spray. I've wanted to go to St John for years - I never realized that the no-see-ums can be very bad at times. Bug spray is your friend, especially if you're in a bathing suit!

It seems the going to is easy, it is the coming back that is the issue.

Yup, I went to St. Thomas the last weekend of March and had a great time. They check your passport when leaving the islands and heading back to the mainland.

I wouldn't recommend renting a car, all the streets I saw are 1 lane each direction and they drive on the wrong side, pretty easy to get disoriented.

If you want to hit a nice beach with good snorkeling, I highly recommend Coki Beach on the north side of the island. It was 5 minute taxi ride away from my hotel (Wyndham Sugar Bay) and it was the highlight of my trip. Gorgeous white sand, crystal clear water, and lots of fishies that'll eat out of your hand. There's a marine park right next to it too if that's your thing.

For shopping, head to downtown Charlotte Amalie instead of that cruise ship port mall (the name escapes me right now).

Dude you just missed Carnival local Newspaper

Man whish I was you right now, but I will going back home next month for my sisters graduation from UVI.

You might want to check Mountain Top and hit Megans Bay.
I would recommend getting a rental and make sure you drive on the opposite side
Get some Rum and a Jonnie cake to go along with it.

And as far as identification goes your drivers license will do just fine, just make sure you know who current president of the United States is just incase they ask. lol
