I am replacing my KT 133A setup with 256 MB of 2-2-2 SDRAM and 1.2 Ghz T-bird
with K266A, 384 Mb DDR RAM, and Athlon XP 1800...
how much faster (in terms of percent) my new setup would be when compared to the "old" one...?

Going from a 1.2 to an 1800+ will make your computer a bit faster, but after you get past 1.4 ghz, there isn't an incredible difference in speeds, it almost all seems the same. Upgrading to DDR RAm is the way to go, everything runs better, programs open quicker. It will be faster.

Around 30-40% at best. If you're graphics limited in games you won't notice that big of an increase.

You should definitely notice a big difference, and the use of the computer will feel "smoother". Yes, I said "smoother" ;) I remember when I upgraded from a similar setup to my ol' XP 1600+ and the computer just had a better feel to it. A lot faster loading times is one thing you should expect. If you're a gamer, you'll definitely see an increase in game loading, at least I did with UT, Quake3, and CS.

I agree with the thefool, after 1400MHz it gets harder to see a performance gain. However, the gains of the DDR system will definately make a marked improvement in everything. I would suggest getting a motheboard and memory that can handle at least 150-166MHz fsb and unlocking the processor. 300-333MHz DDR speed will give you system a large boost of 266MHz speeds, basically for free.

Well I have decided to upgrade when I got a new video card (Rad 8500 retail) to upgrade Radeon 7500 and I didnt notice any increase in speed, the 8500 sees to be an overkill for my current setup... now 30, 40% now you talking /me happy
+ got myself a GC68... he he and have buyer for my current setup

I think it would be smarter just to get a newer board (KT333?) and DDR ram and use your 1.2 T-bird and wait until faster T-breds or even Barton come out.

Yo,
Assuming all other software and hardware doesn't change, essentially you're going from a 1.2 Ghz CPU to a 1.53 Ghz CPU, and also from 133 Mhz RAM to 266 Mhz RAM.

CPU, you're talking about a 330 Mhz increase, so on the order of a 25% theoretical increase in calculation capability.

As to SDR vs DDR, most applications show not more than 5-10% bump in performance.

Realistically, you're talking about a maximum peak performance increase of 30-35%. But depending upon what application you are trying to run, the CPU or RAM may not be the bottleneck (eg, the video card). Note that since your HDD isn't changing, boot and load times should be virtually unaltered.

One note: since you ar upping from 256MB to 384MB of RAM, you will likely see a couple things that will operate significantly faster than the aforementioned 30-35%bump, especially under W2K and WinXP.

You should definately notice a speed increase with the upgrade; Windows and general programs should be snappier, and games should be a lot faster. Going from a 1.2 GHz Tbird with a Radeon 7500 to a XP 1800+ / DDR with Radeon 8500 will give you a 100% speed upgrade in some games at high resolutions.

Don't worry about getting a KT266A vs. a KT333; there is almost no speed difference between them.

In terms of benchmarks, etc. I would guess a 30-50% speed increase; it's not just a 330 MHz speed upgrade; its a whole new platform with faster memory and a faster Video Card; the Radeon 8500 scales well when going from a Tbird to an Athlon XP or P4.

The only reason I ve got KT266A board was that I got it over at newegg's refurb section for dirt cheap..
$69.00 for KR7A-RAID... it was too tempting to refuse... couple days later I ve got refurb Radeon for another(?) $89.00 dont know how
but it looks like I am going to have a preaty nice setup for dirt cheap.... Cant really go wrong with that..

you won't notice much on regular basis applications. however, you should notice quite some on 3d gamings.
at least mine was...

i used to have celeron 950mhz
and now xp1600+.

but i can't notice much except the 3d games i play.
