Going to the gym, losing jean size, feeling better, gettings abs, cardio 7 times a week, eating healthy....

Hi all,

I go to the gym everyday for cardio, LIGHT weights a few days a week. I'm feeling a LOT better, i'm eating healthier, I'm definitely losing weight around my stomach, but .... everytime I step on the scale it still is only showing a 5 pound weight loss.... am I doing something wrong?

Remember muscle is heavier than fat so keep burning that fat and losing weight little by little. You may not lose a lot of weight in the end but your waistline will get a lot smaller.

OK ... thats what matters I guess. I guess if I was just dieting I would lose the pounds because I wouldn't be gaining a lot of muscle.... but since I'm also working out, the muscie is gaining :)

Can you gain muscle just from running / biking?

Muscle heavier then fat? The last time I checked a pound of muscle and a pound of fat both weighed the same. And I doubt the OP is gaining much muscle if any, simply because he sounds like he's throwing his body into a catabolic state by performing too much cardio.

Yes but a ball of fat and a ball of muscle the same size, muscle will weigh more

What weights are we talking about? Did you start at like 250lbs, or 160lbs? If you changed your diet and exercise routine dramatically, you will definitely lose fat much faster than you can gain muscle. If you didn't have much fat to lose to begin with, you won't see much weight loss.

Most of the time, you can't lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, but it can happen (particularly if you're just starting to get in shape). Eventually your body will sort itself out and you'll show a more consistent fat loss.

How long have you been at your new routine?

example 1: You may not lose a lot of weight in the end but your waistline will get a lot smaller.

theres no reason to correct them and be so smartass about it with your comment

Just ease back on the # of days you are going. also don't do the same cardio all the time switch it up, your body can get to used to the same routine, making it less effective.

Who decided that they're both a pound worth? Saying something that is denser is heavier is common usage of the word.

7 Days a week every week is overkill. Unless the other 2 days are light days like cardio or something.. Other than that your doing fine.

Actually, one way to tell that your regimen is working is to get a scale that can measure body fat (in %). The scales usually aren't very accurate but you should be able to see your body fat percentage drop consistently. If you want a more accurate measurement of body fat, try to get someone at your gym to measure it using calipers (if you're really hardcore you can do it by immersion, which is the most accurate technique).

FYI, 1-2 pounds a week is the best you can hope for in terms of sustainable weight loss. 1 lb of body fat is ~3500 calories, so you need to create a 500 calorie deficit every day of the week to lose 1lb/wk, for 2lb/wk that's a 1000 calorie deficit daily. To give you an idea, the recommended daily intake for the general population by the USDA is 2000 calories (with which you maintain a healthy weight). So to create a 1000 calorie deficit, you'd probably need to have somewhere along the lines of a 1500 calorie intake and burn an extra 500 calories compared to the average amount of activity (which I imagine is fairly low).
