what are some of the things you enjoyed or heard are interesting (besides the lady boys and red light district stuff)? I'll be going with my SO and be staying with some friends.

i'm looking forward to enjoying the food (i've lost 10 pounds in anticipation of gaining 20 back) and chilling on the beaches.

Get all your shots, stay away from Bangkok, go to river market & night markets, don't get caught with drugs.

I spent a few days on the water parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and diving with a odd-shaped helmet on my head. Lots of fun and inexpensive. They gave me a packet full of bread when I dived, so I got to feed the fishies :D

Beware the shemales.

i really enjoyed stopping by Krabi and rock-climbing at nearby island Railay. the outdoor market in Krabi was really good, gotta try the snails. the rocks on Railay were really good and the instructor very good. and course the usual snorkeling and such around phi phi. if u get chance, stick around phi phi for sunset, i regretted after not doing so and seeing friends' pics.

do you know which beach resort town you want to go?

Pattaya is the closest, but also the most played out. It's still nice and all. Seafood near the beach (not the tourist trap ones) are excellent and cheap.
Koi Samui is what everyone been raving about, but that's like a 1 hour flight from Bangkok. Then there's Phukit.

for Bangkok, you can easily spend a day just roaming around "Siam Sqaure" "Siam Center" "Paragon" and "Mah Boon Kong." It's all within vincinity of each other, and off the main/central Skytrain BTS station called "Siam."

full moon party and lady boys...same same but different.

oh and pick up as much fake stuff as you can like dvd's books, handbags.

also indulge in opium, but don't travel with it. everyone will be smoking it, just ask a local for a puff.

or go north and hang out in the jungles, ride some elephants

I spent some time at Ko Chang......... about a 45 minute flight........... very nice :)

I hope to go to other places in Thailand next time I go :)

I liked my time in Thailand but enjoyed Cambodia much more.
Guess it matters about what your expectations are in a vacation.
Climbing Angkor Wat's temples, volunteering at an orphanage, or touring Phom Phen were much more attractive to me than laying on a beach and snorkeling around Koh Samui. To each their own.

We toured via a bus from the north (Chang Rai) all the way to Bangkok over the course of a week. Almost everybody got sick at some point. We got sick of Thai food pretty quick. Those are the negatives. The positives... massages, street markets, temples (though that gets repetitive too), riding elephants, interesting sights. Didn't do Phuket as it was still close to the tsunami incident.

i'll be in thailand during the first 3 weeks of april and hang out in bangkok for the first few days and then we're open to anything after that. we really want to do a lot of relaxing on the beaches and want to avoid the overcrowded areas.

My advice is to leave Bangkok as soon as you can. It's like being in Tijuana.

Flights inside the country are inexpensive and plentiful. You don't have the plan everything ahead of time. We were going to hang around Bangkok but got sick of it pretty fast. Phuket and Phi Phi were much better.

Unfortunately for us (fortunately for Thais) there really are no secluded beach areas in Thailand anymore. All of the beach towns are very touristy and overdeveloped. Not necessarily a bad thing but a lot of people don't like it. For the most part if you want your own space you have to luck out, I've heard reports of these beaches being at Ko Pha Ngan but the most overcrowded are at Pattaya and Phuket. I would absolutely avoid Pattaya unless you're into hookers, and if you are you might as well just stay in Bangkok.

I hope you can handle hot weather. It is brutal in April.

A lot of people will tell you to avoid Bangkok but it is a great city. Just get the fuck out of Khao San, the backbacker area that is like a little bubble of tourists within the city. Go to Mo Chit station on the BTS (end of the line) on the weekends for the Jatujak market. Go to Nana and eat in the Arab district. If you have the Lonely Planet I think this Egyptian (or maybe Lebanese) place is in there but I'm not sure.. it has a sign with blue letters and a white background. Order naan bread and babganush. Near Nana BTS there is a streetside vendor selling shawarma on the main road. Buy this. Check out Soi Cowboy, be prepared to beat away hookers. Siam Paragon is a good respite from the weather, it is air conditioned. Go there and check out a movie for a few bucks once the weather starts to murder you.
