Going to Tahoe - Been there? I got questions.

Taking a road trip w/ friends from Southern California. 😀

After checking online, we're thinking about going to "Boreal" ski area. It seems about the median price for lift tickets for snowboarding... place any good? There of course the more popular/bigger places but we're all beginners so I'm thinking it shoudln't matter much. It says its 15 min. from Lake Tahoe.

Also, do you guys the best/cheapest place to rent snowboard gear around that area? Things to do around that area? I think only a few of us are going to snowboard so for the others, what can they do around Tahoe for about 6 hours? We're all 20 year old college students.

Thanks.

I've been to Boreal. It is kinda small, and I think it is geared towards begginers. The last time I Was there, my friends and I had a ski lift to ourselves and that was great. Literally no line. That was towards the back of the mountain where its tougher than begginer.
Yah. if your begginers it doesn't matter too much. The begginer slopes are always real crowded.

As for gear, I'd just rent it at Boreal with a begginers package so you can learn something, unless one of you knows how to board and can teach the rest. Otherwise, your first dismount from the lift is gonna be rather intimidating 🙂.
Hmm... The rest of you can go to a casino or something. Just don't gamble at the tables, and try not to give them a reason to ID you.

HAve fun... When are you going and where are you staying? My friends and I are planning a snow trip as well... We looking into a cabin.

Yeah, if you've never boarded before, it's best to get the instructional packages which provide free gear with purchase of instructional session. Never been to Boreal, I've only been to NorthStar and BearValley.

If you're staying in South Lake Tahoe, I like Heavenly. I learned to ski at Boreal and what was said earlier about beginners is true. Heavenly is close to the "action". Sugar Bowl has GREAt runs too.< always leaves rubber legs @ Sugar Bowl. Boreal is a great "middle of the road" place. Have fun!

Well I've snowboarded already several times (about 8 times or so)... I can get down w/o falling and such, but I can't carve yet (still learning). As for my other friends they are like 2nd timers. Oh well, Heavenly lift tickets are too much it seems.. guess Boreal will do.

We're actually commuting from the East Bay area so it's going to be a 3 hours trip. I'ts going to be painful to leave Tahoe and snowboarding and force myself to drive several hours. 😛 But we dont' have the money to stay.

Any more suggestions to do around the area?

Spend your money up here!
Geeze, the skiing down there can't even compare... spend half teh coin, have twice the mountain... go FERNIE/KICKING HORSE/LAKE LOUISE.

You'll never need anything else.

you have hills there
no real mt's till you get this side of the mississippi and then keep going

Boreal is pretty much a beginners place. Someone said NorthStar, which is more geared towards families but I haven't been there since they opened the new runs so maybe it's gone up a few notches. Personally, if you want a fairly challenging spot for intermediates that's a decent price with not much in the way of lift lines, check out a little spot called Diamond Peak.
