Going to Sydney/Canberra

I am heading down to Sydney and Canberra and have no clue as to places to stay, things to do, etc. Anyone familiar with the area?

My wife is from Canberra, the capital city of Australia. I'll ask her to read and respond to this thread tonight.

Speaking from personal experience, there's a lot more to do in Sydney than there is Canberra. Unless you're into visiting places like Washington D.C., etc.

I am going to Sydney this July. Any tips for me? I know that I have to bring a thick jacket because it is their "winter" below the equator.

I went to the Toranga Zoo, Manley Beach, and the gardens while I was there in a day (Sydney). The Zoo is cool. Wild parrots in the trees, some of the unique animals, etc. Manley Beach is kind of a shopping area, but I went to see the surf.

I got a Buddy who lives about 2 hours North of Sydney and he sends me some fantastic pictures form there.
