I'll be studying at Universidad de Cantabria up on the northern coast of Spain for the month of June, but I'm heading out a week early and staying a week later so I can travel.

I'm flying into Madrid, and I was planning to go to Granada, Sevilla, and Valencia for about a week before I have to start school.

I think Barcelona and Madrid are possible weekend trips.

Since I'll be there for another 10 days after school is over, I'm thinking about going to Rome and Venice for a couple of days, then wrap up my trip with more of Madrid and Barcelona, since I have to fly out of Madrid anyways.

Anybody have any suggestions or tips that they can give me?

Thanks.

Ok, so I am getting conflicting reports on hostels....good and bad....

I read that Ibiza was closed for the season. I didn't know there was a season. Anyways, that place is at least a day trip just to get there from where I am.

Depends on the hostel. I've been doing the hostel thing for the last couple of months, mostly weekends when I have off and I can truthfully say that there are all kinds.

For example, the one I stayed in Ribe, Denmark was awesome. Very clean and new, kinda reminded me of a freshman dorm with bunk beds. The City Sleep In in Aarhus, Denmark was ok, an older hotel that had changed into a hostel. Had double doors and private bathrooms.

The Sunflower Hostel in Berlin was slightly dirtier, older, and louder but it was ok.

The Le Montclair Montmartre in Paris was dirty and old, that 's all I can say. They were trying to renovate it but the bathrooms had missing tiles and some of the outlets were missing and stuff.

The International something or other in Paris was nicer, private shower and all.

Try to read the reviews and stuff, that's all I can say. And if it's too nasty, find another place. But you can't beat them for the price, I just made reservations in Prague, $13 a night in a 4person room, and it's the high season too. If you don't feel like putting up with other people, get a single, they cost about twice as much as what a multi-person room would cost. And most places have lockable closests in the rooms so you can keep valuables there. And don't worry about the people, they are mostly students looking to see around Europe just like you or me. Hell, you might even meet someone. I went drinking with girls in my room one night in Stockholm.

I usually use them to book and their ratings (averaged from reviews people submit) tend to be a pretty good guideline, anything below 70% usually means that it isn't anything special, just a place to crash for the night. But beware, you standards may not be the same as someone else's, especially if they are European, who don't seem to mind luke-warm showers;) And the most important factor to consider is probably whether or not they have a curfew.
