Going to Salt Lake City/Park City...what to do...

My girlfriend and I are going to a wedding in Salt Lake City in the middle of August. We Will have a whole weekend to be "tourists", so I was wondering what to do. We like the outdoors a lot and were thinking of staying in Park City for the free weekend.

What are some fun things to do out there this time of the year? Should we stay in Park City or Salt Lake...or should we go somewhere else? I'd love to do some hiking, sight-seeing, and maybe even some whitewater rafting. Any suggestions on places to go and things to see would be great.

White water rafting will be tough. You'd have to go down to southern Utah to get that in.

Park city is ok, but expensive (IMO). It's an hour or less drive from SLC.

There is Mt. Timpanogos caves in Provo Cayon, website

Go mountain biking down the slopes at Deer Valley (right next to Park City).

It's great fun, and you take the ski lifts up, so it's not too much work 😀 They offer full suspension bike rentals, too.

My brother has a house in Deer Valley. It's great up there in the summer. Just bring a light jacket because it gets pretty chilly at night.

I you're in Park City you'll be pretty close to Deer Creek Resevoir or Jordanelle Resevoir where you can fish or probably rent watercraft.

😀 That's where I live

Deer creek is really low right now. Strawberry is just another 30 minutes away, has better fishing, and cheaper boat rentals than Deer Creek.

Park City Mountian Resort is pretty fun right now. They have miniture golfing, the alpine slide, mountain biking, shopping, dining, etc.

There's also Lagoon (theme park), though IMO it's more money than it's worth.

If you need a place to stay, Midway (right by heber, just past park city) has some great inns for decent prices, like:

The Blue Boar Inn
Inn on the Creek

Also, if you really enjoy hiking, there's a great trail on timpanogos, and as Amish said, there's a paved trail all the way up to the caves which have some incredible stalagtites and stalagmites.

Funny you say that...I'm actually going there for a Mormon wedding...but since neither my girlfriend nor I are mormon...we'll only be enjoying the festivities afterward.

Thanks for all the help. Those caves sound really cool and we'll probably go hiking around that area. The mountain biking sounds like alot of fun...so I'll have to check that out.

How is the weather between SLC and Park City? about the same or is Park City quite a bit cooler?

Park City is cooler than SLC and will be nice since in SLC there have been high 90 to low 100 degree temps.

If they still have it you can go on a tour of the Park City Silver Mine. Make sure you take a light jacket when you go. Very cold in the silver mine.
