I had split opinion on whether to drive to Rosartio or take a cab.

some said, drive directly to Rosarito, park in a hotel or anywhere populated. it should be secure.

the other said, drive to the mexican border on the US side, park there, and take a cab from there on.

any advice?

also, anyone know which hotel is a good place to stay in around Rosarito area?

You should "drive to the mexican border on the US side, park there, and take a cab from there on". It's the SAFEST way.

I went to Tijuana (sp) in the new year day of 2000 and stayed for a night. It was so creepy.
I went there with 4 other guys but only one guy could speak a little Spanish -> communication problems.
You should go with group of friends and must be very careful with your money: put them in different places like in your socks, jacket, pants, etc.

Finally, don't forget to bring your passport with you. Your driver's license doesn't count, hehehe...
When you come back, you would expect that the customs will be very rude and look at you as if you're an illegal immigrant especially if you're look like a Mexican. I was really annoyed with that. Next time I'd rather go to Canada than Mexico.

Maybe it was my first time and that's why I had bad experience.

However, if you decide to drive there, make sure that your insurance covers it. Also, please forgive me and disregard all my advice above if you're Mexican, hehehe...

Rosarita has got be the the COOLEST little beach town I've ever been to. I'd recommend driving over because it's about 30-40 minutes from the border, and the cabby will try to d!ck you on the cost, guaranteed, especially if you're anything near white. ;)

Party, party, party, then drive back and get a room on THIS side of the border. The hotels in Rosarita are really nice, but they're pretty expensive, and usually packed. Be sure to hit the Boom-Boom Room (if it's still there). That place was fuuuuuuuuuuuuun. ;)

Also, if you're going to go to Tiajuana for debauchery afterwards, try your best NOT to go there drunk or alone. Even the "tourist" areas are bad. I saw, and I sh!t you not, this one legged dude robbing some drunk who'd passed out on the street. He took the guys wallet, searched him, and then propped him up and ran the guys head into a wall to make sure he was completely out. Then he HOPPED away. Ohhhh... and last but not least: booby bars. Trust me. They have the HOTTEST girls there.

Hope that helps.

Drive. Get mexico insurance and drive. Once you get out of TJ it's an easy trip. And don't go to TJ unless you're under 21 and you don't know anyone with a fake ID.

You are taking a big chance if you drive in Mexico. Even Mexican insurance is no guarantee you won't wind up in jail; and once you're in Mexican jail-....you have to be bribed out by your family or friends. That can take months.
