I grew up in RI. This weekend's supposed to be VERY nice weather, so I suggest you head into Newport.
FYI... the Waterfire sounds like a good idea, but it's actually kind of lame. Although, it's right in the heart of the city and wouldn't be bad if you parlayed that into going to a nice restaurant. Eat on Federal Hill... it's walkable from there and is comparable to Boston's North End (not better, but comparable)
If you DO go to Newport, take a tour of the Breakers. It's insane. I don't think it's that expensive, plus it's close to the boardwalk area that I'm sure will have some outdoor bands and entertainment. Not to mention getting the seafood down there. It's to die for.
What else are you into?
I made reservations at
Hemenway's and I'm staying at the new
Hotel Providence, so I think that's a good plan for Providence. Waterfire does look like something that's lame after the first 15 min. or so, but they'll have jazz playing at some stage there, so it seems like a nice thing to just do the romantic walk along the water.
A tour of Breakers I think is $15/person. If you really think it'd be worth it to go inside, then I'll consider it. I haven't planned much else for Newport tho', except to spend most of Sunday there.
