So I'm doing a weekend trip to Rhode Island this weekend, mainly because I want to try and visit various other states in the northeast. I'm going to Providence for Waterfire and I will likely visit Newport as well. Anyone been to RI before and can recommend other places to go and see?

How's parking in Providence. I get the impression it's hard to find parking, but it can't be harder than parking in cities like Boston or NY, can it?
 
Haven't been there in many years, but the beaches in Newport are nice. If you want touristy stuff there are several mansions in and around Newport. When I say mansions, these are over the top mansions, the kind owned by the top 100 richest people, the Breakers being the most famous. There's a naval base there (was just a couple blocks from my house) so maybe you could go check out a carrier or something. Also, having a naval base, if you wanted to find some prostitutes you could probably find them. 😉

Yeah I was thinking of doing the Cliff Walk in Newport. I just realized tho' we'd have to pay to actually enter those mansions, which doesn't seem like it's worth it. Any recommendations for beaches in Newport?

I grew up in RI. This weekend's supposed to be VERY nice weather, so I suggest you head into Newport.

FYI... the Waterfire sounds like a good idea, but it's actually kind of lame. Although, it's right in the heart of the city and wouldn't be bad if you parlayed that into going to a nice restaurant. Eat on Federal Hill... it's walkable from there and is comparable to Boston's North End (not better, but comparable)

If you DO go to Newport, take a tour of the Breakers. It's insane. I don't think it's that expensive, plus it's close to the boardwalk area that I'm sure will have some outdoor bands and entertainment. Not to mention getting the seafood down there. It's to die for.

What else are you into?
 
I've been to Watefire. I enjoyed it when I went.

I spend alot more time on the RI coast than I do in Providence, but from my experiences, parking is no worse in Providence than it is in Boston. However during Waterfire just like during Boston events, parking is harder to find. Keep that in mind.


As for Newport.

There are alot of things to do. Tha mansions are very nice, if you enjoy that sort of thing, my recommendations are either the Breakers or the Marble House.

BoberFett is correct on the Naval Base, however not sure when he last was in Newport. Its considerably more difficult to get on the base than it used to be. Also it does have two carriers, the Saratoga and the Forrestal. However neither are viable to the public. I actually don't believe any of the ships are currently viable to the public. Also the Naval Base is where the Naval War College is, the actual navy pulled out in the 70's so unfortunately you won't be easily finding prostitutes. Most of those end up being called in from Providence anyway.

Cliff Walk is very nice walk, especially on a nice day.

Also the Internation Tennis Hall of Fame is in Newport if you care to visit that.

Beach wise. Depends on what you are looking for. These are the ones I would suggest.
There is 3rd Beach - Actually in Middletown, Second Beach (Sachuset Town Beach) - Also in Middletown, First Beach (Easton's Beach) - back to Newport, and lastly Gooseberry Beach. Now all these beaches are free to go to, however you have to pay to park. Not sure the rates on all of them. But I'm guessing $20 at the most. While 1st, 2nd, and 3rd beach are all on the same strip, Gooseberry Beach is around the drive.
Only thing I will suggest is if 1st Beach is experiencing its red tide - avoid it. Not worth it. I'd suggest either 2nd Beach or Gooseberry Beach.
 
Go to Narragansett Beach. Drool over hot URI girls. Go to Galilee and eat lots of lots of lobster. Go home.

I've lived in Rhode Island my whole life and I've found Narragansett Beach to be the best beach by far if compared to any other beach in Rhode Island. Overcrowded and pricey, but the combination of good waves (for surfing if you're into that), clean water (usually NO SEAWEED), and fine sand more than make up for any shortcomings.

Also Waterfire kinda sucks don't make Waterfire you're main thing to do in Providence, you can look at it but plan on spending most of you time just walking around maybe go to the Providence Place Mall.
 
My wife is from Woonsocket RI. I went with her once about 15 years ago. I couldnt wait to get back home. There may be more to do there now. Hope you have a good time.
 
RI? You are going to get a room right? you need to buy a watermelon, some lube, picture of a hot chick's face tape to the watermelon.

I made reservations at Hemenway's and I'm staying at the new Hotel Providence, so I think that's a good plan for Providence. Waterfire does look like something that's lame after the first 15 min. or so, but they'll have jazz playing at some stage there, so it seems like a nice thing to just do the romantic walk along the water.

A tour of Breakers I think is $15/person. If you really think it'd be worth it to go inside, then I'll consider it. I haven't planned much else for Newport tho', except to spend most of Sunday there.

Here is the thing with the Breakers. If you like tours and stuff along those lines. Go, its going to b 100% worth it for you. If you don't enjoy that kind of stuff, then its not worth it. Problem is that I grew up here as well, so the manisons have alot alot of the zeal they once had. However a few of my friends that didn't grow up here throughly enjoyed the mansions when they visited them this summer.
 
Is there a way to visit Breakers w/o doing the tour? I don't necessarily care for the history and I don't want to spend over an hour listening to all the details of the house, but I'd like to see inside.

Seconded. 2nd beach is a good beach.

Scarborough ain't bad either.... there's a cool section off to the side where you can follow a path to an old stone hut thing and climb around on these enormous rocks and make out wit yo woman. mucho romantico

Thanks for the beach recommendations. Which one(s) are close to where the mansions are though? I want to cram as much into one day as possible, and don't want to have to drive far from the Cliff Walk area (unless it's en route to NY as I head back home)
