Going to Phoenix/Tempe, AZ - need things to do

I'll be staying at The Buttes in Mid May for a conference. I'll have one full free day and evenings free to explore. Recommend some interesting things to do or see while I'm there.

When me and my dad were out there for the Barrett Jackson Car Auction we went to the Frank Lloyd Wright house at Taliesin West, the Phoenix Zoo, downtown Scottsdale, and a few other random places. Just looking at some of the houses down there was crazy enough

I haven't lived there in years, but there is a great party scene in down town Tempe, by the university. If you are into sports, all the major league franchises are in the Phoenix area.

Hiking is a great option as the mountains ring the city providing numerous options. There are a few ATOT members who regularly go who would probably meet up with you.

According to Google the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is about 3.5 hours away. Is that about accurate?

I'm thinking I'll see the Diamondbacks play one night. There playing the Rockies 3 of 4 nights that I'll be there. Another notch in my lifetime goal to see a game in every stadium.

If you are planning to travel that far, don't forget to stop off at Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. You will not be disappointed you did.

Yes, the Grand Canyon is about 3.5 hours from the Phoenix area.

I guess I didn't mention that my wife is coming too. I don't think that meeting up with people from "that stupid web site" (her words) is on the table.

Are there things to do near the baseball stadium?

Other than sporting events, downtown Phoenix is a ghosttown at night or on weekends. There are bars all over around the stadium, but that's about it. There are a few clubs if you are into that stuff too, but the better ones are in Scottsdale if that's what you like.
