I'm going to visit my friend and perhaps make a road trip with another from Los Angeles to Oakland. My old dorm roommate now graduated and lives up there and has invited us. I'm looking for possible hang outs if anyone from the region knows of any. Also if there are good pit stops between the two cities :)

Points of interest: Bars, Bars, Bars, and more Bars.
Also any clubs with good progressive music or ambience.

Its for a 3 day weekend.

So know of any? Thanks for your time

There is nothing in Oakland, if you want bars and nightlife in the east bay I would go to Berkeley. Concord also has some nice bars or so I've heard, haven't gotten the chance to check them out yet.

The whole Bay Area is chock full of culture and crap to do. The thing I know best is food, and there's tons of good food in that area. If you're going to be there Sunday I highly recommend you make the hour or so trip from Oaktown to San Fran, to the Harbor Village Restaurant in the Embarcadero(sp?) Center. On Sunday mornings they have Dim Sum (again with the misspelling?) and it's worth every penny. So damn good.

Not so sure on the bars and nightclubs. I've only recently become old enough to go into most of them, and since I turned 21 I've been to the Bay Area maybe twice.

oakland is cool
suburbanites and other non-urbanites always suggest you go to sf instead
ignore them, for they are ignorant
the mallard is a pretty cool bar, at least the last time i was there a few years ago
remember that like new york, you gotta go outside to smoke in oakland, so find a bar with a pleasant spot to park outdoors if you smoke

There's Jack London Square in Oakland. IMO, that's probably the nicest place in Oakland, after that you're better off going to SF.

Ok guys, thanks for the warning but its not like i'm going to stay inside of Oakland the whole time. Isn't SF 10 miles away.

Just trying to get constructive suggestions around the region.

I guess I should edit my title. Think outside the box!! :p

There might be some decent places in Oakland I'm not sure, but you are better off going to SanFran...or in my opinion, even BETTER going east to Pleasanton/Dublin and if that isn't good heading 20 miles north to Walnut Creek. To sum it up: Pleasanton is good, SanFran is good but harder to find places and get around. Walnut Creek has some good spots and is smaller atmosphere, like Pleasanton.

I-80 heading west is a step in the right direction. :)

I've been to Oakland to meet up with some people, I learned that just because you're on San Pablo Ave., doesn't mean you're anywhere close to where you need to be. And according to the signs, it's okay to drive on the shoulder from 4PM-6PM in certain locations.

There isn't anything to do or see in Oakland besides Jack London Square.

Everyone goes to emeryville, berkeley the city, or walnut creek.
