Whats your top destinations in the US? Obviously NY is given. Is it possible to stay cheap in NY? Im thinking about driving from coast to coast to get to know US. What would be a good route and a realistic schedule?

Land in NY and hangout a bit.
Experience the Eastern seaboard
Drive south and experience some southern comfort/hospitality
Bask in the Florida sun
Head west to see the Great Mississippi river
Swim across Louisiana
Have some Texas bbq
Walk the glass-bottom Grand Canyon walkway
Gamble in Vegas
See the stars in Hollywood
Drive up PCH
Have some bread in San Fran (don't forget the bridge)
Fly back to NY

By my math you're looking at $5,000 (conservative estimate) including airfare for a 3 week trip, so what is your definition of cheap? If you're only staying in NYC for a few days, will $150/night really set you back all that much? You can stay at my pad up until the 30th of this month for a few bucks, and I have some friends that rent out their apartments on craigslist as well. You can stay in a cheap hotel in Jersey or one of the boroughs and drive or take public transportation into Manhattan.

HN's itinerary looks okay to me for a young guy going on a road trip, but it really depends on what interests you.

Too many places to name, it's so damn big here :)

Just taking a roadtrip alone, you'll find some very interesting people and places

Well if you really don't mind doing all the driving yourself, and are not too particular about accomadations, I think you could do a month long trip across the US for under $4k.

A month long car rental w/ unlimited miles + 1 month's worth of gas: ~$1800
You can sleep in the car or buy a cheap tent and sleeping bag and sleepin in random parks, campgrounds, National/State parks, etc...
It's quite easy to eat cheaply...under $20 a day. Most of the best things to see are free, and even the things that cost money have usually have a "free day."

There's a whole lot of country to see here and roadtripping is one of the best ways to see it. IMHO I would only spend the first 2 days or so in NYC, then hit the road.

I think it would be a great trip.

Washington, DC has many free museums and attractions. Virginia has many attractions as well with many Civil War battlefields, and the founding of the country.

Visit the National Parks...get a Year pass for about $60...Grand Canyon, Yosemitie, Grand Teton, Yellowstoen, endless beaches and seashores...

would list more if wasnt so tired...
