I'm planning on traveling by bus to New York (from Toronto) to visit my sister in Brooklyn and a couple friends are coming down from near Boston.

My friends and I aren't 21 but we would like suggestions on what we should do and where we should stay over a weekend in New York City.

This will be my first time traveling alone by bus.

step 1: punch your friends from Boston in the throat and leave them in the east river.
step 2: congratulate yourself on freeing yourself from anything associated with Boston with a drink at a skeezy NYU bar (it's been awhile since I've had to worry about it, but I remember always seeing tons of fake ID places around christopher street)

but really, it depends what you're into. if it were my first time in NYC, I'd probably want to hit up museums (at least the Met), try and catch a cheap show (spring awakening is ftw... couldn't say whether or not prices have gone up since they won a bunch of tony's, though), visit FAO Schwartz, and do all that touristy stuff :)

When walking around with your friends, be sure to stop abruptly at random intervals to gawk up at the buildings.

also, it's customary to walk shoulder to shoulder to fill up the entire sidewalk.

For added fun, ride the subway but don't hang on to one of the provided rails. When the train starts moving and you nearly fall on top of your friend and/or on to the floor, be sure to laugh loudly at your crazy big city experience.

maybe it's just because it's 2 am but when I read the last part I couldn't stop laughing.

Agreed. ESB is not nearly as nice.

Places to eat? If you have a group, go to Carmines on 44th st and Broadway for a good family style meal. If you don't want that there is a good pizza place called Johns on the same block.

If you're willing to spend $80 bucks for so, go on a Grayline tour of the city, it'll hit all of the good areas.

Be sure to stop everywhere and take pictures of stupid stuff, like dogs taking a dump on the sidewalk, stupid cafes, signs, buildings, and most importantly, cops on horses, nobody has ever seen a cop on a horse before, therefore you *MUST* take 30 pictures of it. Make sure you do it in the middle of the sidewalk or on the corner of an intersection while people are trying to cross the street.

Do not have your subway card ready for the turnstyle and walk really slowly into the subway car.

Always eat at chain places right in times square, never go 1/2 block in any other direction. While there, enjoy the crappy $18 TGI Friday Burger, the $20 plate of microwaved Lasagna at Olive Garden, or the $25 bill per person at the perrenial trash heap known as Planet Hollywood.

Think you're cool for going to those places while in NYC, instead of hitting any random "O" bar in that 1/2 block radius from Times Square (O'Paddies, O'Reillies, O'Flanaghans, O'Hurleys...etc), where you can get a huge burger for $9.99 and a beer for $2.50.

Do bars allow people 18+ but under 21 to still eat there?

I don't think I have ever been carded at the door for a pub-ish place. Go to a night club and that'll be different.

When the walk signal says don't walk, stay right where you are. Abide the law and keep people from breaking it. The police will thank you.

[edit]And show off your friends from Boston around here. The louder the better. But do it near the west river, unlike what loki suggested. I jog at the east river and don't need anymore people crowding the wide walkway.
