i work in Fairfield!

unfortunately theres not much to do in that area. you can head up rt.3 and take a stop off at the meadowlands if you're in to horse racing, or go a bit further and find yourself in either NY or Hoboken.

Several battles in the American revolution were fought here, so if you're into history that's something to do.

Princeton is a nice town to visit and walk around.

NYC is kind of cool...

October is a bit cold for the Jersey shore...

You could hike up to High Point. It's like... a whole 2500 feet above sea level. ;)

LET'S GO DEV-ILS! You could catch a hockey game. ;) Also in the same area is a big-ass Toys 'R Us. I always want to go in there after the wife is done at Ikea but I never get to. :|

Speaking of the Devils, you could hit the pine barrens and hope the Jersey Devil doesn't kill you. ;)

Fairfield, NJ is in Essex County? That's right up by NYC. I'd say 20-30 minutes by train. Train is the best way to get into the city... don't have to deal with traffic and parking. Parking in the city will rape you. It's $16 to take the train in from where I am (round trip), I imagine it's a bit cheaper where you are.

Leaving is the only fun thing about New Jersey. I spent a lot of time in Edison and the surrounding areas. If you like you can go on late-night walks and get mugged a few times, that's always fun.

If you are single - New York City, Philly, Atlantic City. If you are part of a couple, then Cape May in October is great. Princeton is good for like 2 minutes - hit the record exchange - its awesome.

If you are into fishing, you hit the jackpot - Fall Striped Bass run is just fantastic. Catch a party boat up around Sandy Hook, you'll catch as many 10-20 lb stripers as you want. Could even hook into a 50+ lb cow. Can fish them anywhere along the NJ coast in October; Sandy Hook area / Cape May rips are two of the best spots. Can catch them from the surf, if your not into the party boat scene. You can hit Island Beach State Park or any one of a number of surf locations that produce well.
