Going to Mexico soon...

And it being my first time going to Mexico, everyone I know that has been is telling me to start taking antibiotics before I head down there, and while I am there. Anyone else heard of this? What will happen if I don't?

No antibiotics: no return tickets necessary. You'll die a writhing, painful death from the water, the food, the venemous insects, the drug dealers, and the infected teen hookers. Enjoy your vacation.

Probably depends on where you are going. Although I spent six weeks in Monterrey and never got sick once from any food. Just drink bottled water always. Most of your better hotels water is safe for brushing teeth etc. but just get in the habit of bottled water. Also when eating out be very careful of even ice cubes. Those can be the sneaky ones. I also spent some time in Mexico City, Nicaragua, and Venezuala and never had problems. Bottled water is the key and just using common sense when eating out or from vendors on the street. Come to think of it I did have to get some yellow fever innoculations for my trip to Venezuala but that is totally different from Mexico. Have a great trip!

I have been to Mexico close to a dozen times. And I have been to the Dominican Republic, on three occasions.

First off I have never taken antibotics and I'm still here. I never got sick for that matter either.
Like fw3308 said, I wouldn't drink the water. However I never had a problem with brusing my teeth with the regular water.
Though I did rinse with bottle water, because it was provided and the tap just tasted bad.

Now I am not sure if you are prown to illness, then you might think about bring some antibotics. But I really won't worry that much

Some people just go to extremes so much, I don't think they enjoy their vacation. Its like the last cruise I went on, because of the illness
on cruise ships at the time, there were people walking around with masks and rubber gloves on.

Yeah, my bf's parents own a condo there. So we are going to be staying for about a week. His parents are rich, unfortunately I am not and am now broke. But hey I figure I'll never get another chance to go anyplace that nice.

I don't know who's telling you to start taking antibiotics for a vacation to Mexico but they are way off. Just don't drink tap water and you'll be fine.

Oh and just curious, where about in Mexico are you travelling?

Akumal
Akumal is great, really beautiful, but it's condo heaven now. I remember when it was nothing more than a couple of cabañas and a bar on the beach. It's still nice though; you'll love it. If you don't snorkel already, you should learn while you're there.

I'll probably take them anyway. I don't want to chance getting sick, even if it is a small chance. Nothing like the sh!ts to ruin a vacation.
