Going to Maui in September...any suggestions for must see/things to do?

Never been there before and I would like to do some fun things while I'm there, other than the obvious snorkeling, kayaking etc. My wife and I are going for 7 nights and we will have a rental car.

I went there with my family last November, it is freakin amazing!

We went snorkling at Lanai (The famous Bill Gates island), then spent the rest of the day on the secluded beach there. It was amazingly beautiful.

Here is a great tip: Do not do the Hanna Highway... it is stupid. The scenary is amazing, but it takes all day and the 7 Springs (or whatever they are called) are not that cool. We went hiking through some mountain one day, which was cool (since I am an amateur photgrapher).

Here are a few pics (not all are from Hawaii)

black rock beach is really nice, good snorkeling there
if you're a golfer, be sure to bring your sticks!

I can't remember which one it is but there is a mile marker on the eastern side of the island that has amazing snorkeling. Get one of those free maps and you will find it. Also, I really like Hanna and the 7 pools. I went their after a wedding at night in the full moon and went swimming in them with the wedding party. It was great! Also, if you rent a car get a beater, you will blend in better with the locals and won't look like a howley.

Sorry, I meant the western side...

One more thing, make sure to go to the farmer markets!!! There is nothing like making your own guava/rum smoothes to start the day with. Also, the avacados are friggen huge!

go snorkeling at the Molokini Crater... absolutely beautiful and visibility of ~200ft :Q 😀

i also thought that the road to Hanna was pretty boring... if you run out of things to do (which you prob wont) then its alright to kill time and look at beautiful scenery, but if you're on a tight schedule i'd just as soon skip it to spend more time on something more interesting (and less nauseous 😉)

HAha! Me too! That was like the first car ride that actually made me sick to my stomach... 😀 I got some great pictures from it though.

Just went over christmas... I had a great time.
-Maui Downhill (www.mauidownhill.com)... we took the sunrise tour. They drive you up the volcano before sunrise. You watch the sunrise at 10000 feet, then you get on a bike and coast all the way down (38 miles). It was really fun... just make sure you bring some warm clothes.
-Jawz Tacos in Kihea... the best fish tacos I've ever had. We had fish tacos for lunch everyday we were there.... saved $$$
-Rent a decent set of snorkels and fins for the week if your hotel doesn't give them to you for free... Snorkel Bobs, Maui Dive shop, etc...
-Scuba...

Other than the obvious choices, I have 2 suggestions:
1) You should definitely go up Mount Haleakala for sunrise one morning.....it is unbelievable. You can drive up there yourself if you want to, but as Wah said, there are companies that take people up and down the mountain. Whether you go on a tour or drive yourself, you will probably have to leave at like 4:00 am in order to get to the observatory in time for the sunrise. Also, it's freaking cold up there, so make sure to dress warm and/or bring blankets.
2) Luaus are pretty fun to do as well, especially if you haven't ever been to one. I think the one I went to was the Old Lahaina Luau.

Go to Iao Needle, go swim at the Hotel pools til you get kicked out (me and my friends always get kicked out fast because we're Hawaiian, don't look like the typical white tourists), then when you've been kicked out of all the pools, go take a few dips off of Black Rock...time it so you jump on top of the scuba divers...

Then do the Haleakala, go to Hana, and around the "Head" or north side of the island...you'll but puckering your butt cheeks on that road...

One fun part on that road is after you round the corner of the island to the dry area, the road gets really bad. We were in the tour bus, and I just grabbed my video camera and started filming, and it turned out really funny because the ride was so damn bumpy.

My favorite part was waking up at 6am (which felt perfectly normal thanks to the time zone difference), walking out front and snorkeling right off the beach. You feel like you're swimming in a tropical acquarium.

I want to go back!

yea go for the shaved ice 🙂 i love that stuff....

learn how to surf... i took lessons from goofy foot surfing school, they were pretty good.
