Me and one of my friends are going to LA for a few days. I've never been and want to see what all the fuss is about. We'd like to be as close to the "hot spots" as possible. Clubs, shopping area, bars, dining, whatever. There's a myriad of places to stay at ... right now I'm thinking a hotel in the Hollywood or Beverly Hills area. Are there any bad parts of Hollywood? What about Burbank, is that any good? I heard LAX hotels suck.

We're not looking for anything super expensive, just nothing sketchy/nasty. We're trying to wrap a 5 day trip with hotel, airfare, car rental combo for maybe like $1200 total/person on the high end. So far hotel + airfare ranges from about $650 (seems like that would be gross) to $2000+.

Also, I realize we'll need to drive a bunch, but some clubs/places to eat within walking distance would rock.

Tips appreciated! :)

Burbank is actually very nice. Middle class, upper middle class, developing night life, and close airport access. Also, it's cheaper and you can find parking everywhere.

You can stay somewhere in Downtown LA. You'll pay more but you'll be walking distance from everything.

If you DON'T have a car DTLA is the spot you want to be in.

If you DO have a car you DON'T want to stay in DTLA because they will rape you $30/night for parking (isn't alot compared to SF but still, alot for LA)

Hollywood is a shit hole. Beverly Hills is nice but expensive.

I'd stay somewhere near the coast personally like Marina del Rey or Manhattan Beach.

There are a lot of shit hole hotels and some really nice ones. Obviously, the better ones will cost more.

We're debating between a couple places near the walk of fame or marina del ray, possibly beverly hills. Thanks for the heads up so far. We will have a rental.

I hear north hollywood is the place to be

I just moved to NoHo and it's surprisingly alot better than I thought. Of course, I don't live in the ghetto area of NoHo and it's not summer anymore...

You can only drive places. And Santa Monica is separated from the rest of LA by traffic.
