So what does one do in Honolulu/Oahu for 3 days? Yes, I know it's the rainy season, but this was an unplanned trip, so I need ideas stat. Waikiki beach is a given, as is Diamondhead and North Shore. Any specifics would be appreciated though...and trying to keep things on a budget.

Hanauma Bay is awesome, even this time of the year. Of course as you said, Waikiki and Haliewa. Downtown Honolulu is cool, kind of. I spent most of my three months there on the beaches.

Find a scruffy beach-comber type private investigator to find your long lost father who may or may not be tied up in some serious business with the Yakuza

If you're at all interested in history or the military, visiting the USS Arizona Memorial is a good idea. Go early, get your ticket, and they'll tell you what time your tour is. Then you should have time to tour the USS Missouri and USS Bowfin while you're waiting. The USS Arizona Memorial is free, but it's ~$20 to tour the USS Missouri and USS Bowfin. And don't take your camera out on the bus ride to the Missouri, or they will shoot you.

I took a day trip to Oahu from Maui just to visit the Arizona Memorial, and I thought it was a worthwhile trip.

Why go to Waikiki when there are so many better beaches? Waikiki is fake and full of tourists.

Oh and it isn't rainy season right now...it's summer.

Isn't Oahu full of tourists anyway? Besides pineapple and marijuana, what else brings in money to Hawaii?

How tight of a budget? You'll start hemmoraghing money the second you get off the plane in Hawaii. Everywhere you go, someone's got their hand out for a tip. Most tour companies tell you not to rent a car, but IMO, the public transportation/tour options are either unwieldly and slow, or expensive as hell. (The Bus is relatively cheap, but takes forever to get anywhere) The problem with renting a car is parking. Last time we were on O'ahu, (2001) most of the hotels were charging $25-$50/day for parking.
We got a free ticket for the Circle Island Tour, so it cost us $50 to go, which isn't bad. Nice ride, great driver. Had lots of fun on the trip. While we could have driven it ourselves, we didn't know all the places to go, nor the history behind them, and so, it wouldn't have been the same. (cheaper, but fuck it, it's Hawaii. Spend, Spend, Spend!) We went to see Don Ho at a dinner show too, but that's no longer an option.:(
There's a very nice public aquarium in Honolulu if you're into that sort of thing,

Hanauma Bay is one of the nicest snorkeling spots on the island,

The Dole Pineapple plantation is a nice stop on the way to/from the North Shore:

The Byodo-in Temple is really nice, and can be accessed on the way to/from the North Shore:

(go up one way, back the other)

Don't forget to have some shave ice at Matsumoto's while you're at the North Shore...;)

Oh man, I had a hell of a time with their buses. But despite missing three buses, I found my way to Subway for dinner and back to the airport with time to have a beer before my flight back to Maui.
