oh yeah...is it better to stay in miami or fort lauderdale? we'll be arriving at fort lauderdale airport.
 
Go to the Sawgrass Mills Mall if shopping is your thing. I think it is the largest mall in the country and its an outlet so you can score some good deals there.

South Beach is fun at night if clubbing and bar hopping is your thing.

Regular beach during the day if that is your thing.

It really depends on what you enjoy doing.

Spring Break?

My suggestion is you get something, ANYTHING while you still can. I suspect most of the hotel rooms are already reserved.
Also, bring condoms.
LOTS.
Even if you dont have sex 5 times a day you may have friends who will be temped to have unprotected sex if nothing is convenient.
 
Not for spring break. Just a little vacation. The wife and I have never been to Miami so we're going to check out the beaches and as much stuff as we can.

Is there anything to do in Key West or anything along the way there?

Sawgrass is in the top 3, but not the largest.

If you want to go to a great beach, go to Bill Baggs state park (not Bilbo Baggins). It's on Key Biscayne. Faces north, shields you from most of the wind, and is well groomed. Not to mention it isn't full of drunk morons.

Odd sites to see? Coral Castle. Maybe go on a swamp boat ride.
