Going to court tomorow, Dress nice?

Should I dress Casual or dress like i'm going to a dinner party? I'm in Chicago & it might snow a little tomorow. Going because I got 2 tickets once for plate covers that will most likely be dismissed & one for speeding.

i would go in dressed business casual. other words dockers and a nice shirt.

WEAR A SUIT.

If you don't have a suit, wear a dress shirt and dress pants.

your clothes should show the judge respect. That way they will be more apt to help you out.

Last time one of our lawyers let me go to court (bastards keep telling me to stay home), I was mistaken for a lawyer (couldn't figure out why the judge kept talking to the lawyer behind me & why the guy was ignoring the judge till I figured out he was talking to me.)

I went to court for a ticket about 2 months ago, I came from work so was wearing a pair of khaki's and polo type shirt. Most of the people there were wearing jeans and t-shirts and the judge didn't even look at you until after he was done figuring out what to do with your tickets.

It's traffice court, not criminal court. As long as you don't look like too much of a scrub I wouldn't worry about it.

I was 18-19, and they were all for speeding tickets. Wearing a suit says "Your Honor, I respectfully give a sh!t about the outcome of these proceedings". That's all. A tie and decent pants (not pleated) will probably be fine.

Well the rule is to dress nice enough to show proper respect for the court, but not flamboyantly. So I think just wearing a suit, or maybe a sportcoat and slacks (preferably not dockers) is the happy medium. By flamboyant I imagine you don't have a hand-tailored $3000-$4000 suit or a high fashion couture suit, nor frequently wear french cuffs, a pocket square, etc, so you won't go overkill with whatever dress clothes (shirt, tie, suit) you have. Personally I find "dressing up" in dockers and a button-down (by that I mean the collar type, real dress shirts dont have button-down collars) is a bit tacky and half-assed, so if you want to look respectable you might as well go with at least a jacket and tie.

I went to court for a speeding ticket once, dressed in business casual (Dockers, shirt with collar). Got a reduced fine and driver's school. Another guy there for a ticket got off scott-free because he wore a suit. No joke, the judge actually said "Son, you win the best-dressed award today" and dismissed his charges without hearing any evidence. Since most of the people there were in T-shirts and Jeans, I think the judge was trying to send a message that showing a little respect can go a long way.
