Going to college...

Only worth it if it gives you some way to track it down. I dont need to lock the thing up in college, I'm no spy or department of defence contractor. I just want it back if taken by some idiot.

Looks like it will attempt to contact a central server if it detects a bypass of the login, so it might be useful if done well. LOL at the product description though:

The "unauthorized user" is unaware that an alert is being transmitted.

That should be - The "unauthorized user" is unaware that an alert is being transmitted if they don't know jack about networks.

Why anyone would plug a stolen computer into the net without formatting first is beyond me anyway, but I guess there are plenty of people who would steal a laptop without knowing much about them.

I figure if I password protect my bios, disable boot from cd (stop linux), and have only one user account in windows with a pretty good password I should be relatively safe. Of course I'll have a laptop lock.

BTW this is my first laptop so I'm pretty paranoid.

Preventing the theft is your best bet.

Come on OP, lets be honest.. IF (God forbid) youd laptop gets lifted, there is a good 95% chance or so that you will never see it again. =\ Prevent it from getting stolen, keep all the information down so if it does you can at least report it.

Tell your friend to lock up his laptop w/ a microsaver at all times. They're super cheap on eBay. I bought mine for $5 a piece.

The software prevention is 100% retarded.

Well remember the OP may well be living with a new roommate who may bring all forms of life into the room w/o a second thought. To combat theft he'd need to lock it in a bolted down safe or large cabinet when he's not around.

Defcon 1

No point in software security. Anyone who is going to 'steal' it, is not going to bother with finding out if the data is protected. You are not Boeing and you are not living in France. They want to laptop, not what is on it. It can't phone home if it is waxed or booted using another OS.

The Defcon is not the best in the world, but it is an inexpensive start. Any other Kensington lock solution and cable is probably as good. The Defcon will sound if the cable is cut (but can be muffled and beaten into submission) and it can be set with the movement sensory on. It also works as a door alarm. Just set it behind a door on the floor with the sensory on. If the door is opened, it will bump it. Good for folks who worry about sleeping through someone breaking into their hotel room. Just do not hang it on the door as it will go off on false positives from other doors slamming.

Rule 1 of security - without physical security, you have none. Anyone with access to the computer, owns it.

Adding - you can use encryption in Windows XP. BUT - make sure you make copies of your key! Store one in a safe place, and store another in a safer place somewhere else. You lose the key, there is no way of recovering it.

My Dad always said, "All a lock does is keep an honest person honest."

So, throw a lock on it and just "use common sense."

Backup frequently and keep the back ups away from the machine.
