Going to Cancun tomorrow morning....

Scarpozzi

Lifer
I'm wondering about money there, current exchange rate, how expensive things are in general, what to watch out for in as far as crime goes....

The name of the resort I'm going to is Blue Bay Getaway & Spa. Has anyone ever been there? Thanks,

-Scar

I went there for my honeymoon in May and loved it. The weather was great and plenty of free drinks.

We stayed at the Moon Palace -- it's south of the main strip and while the resort was great, the ocean there was terrible. The ocean along the Cancun strip was beautiful and where we spent most of our time.

I think the exchange rate was 11:1 when we were there.

Only flew in and drove down the coast a few hours. Are you going with friends, family, SO?

I'd love to go back with just a bunch of buddies, or at least a few couples so I would have some partners in crime down there. Being with the SO is great but after a few days it seems like it would be fun to have someone to try to keep up with me. 😉

Had some great times in Mexico. Probably the drunkest I have ever been in one day anyway. Walked 5km down the beach to a hut that was barely visible from our resort and smoked cigarettes with some Mexicans that didn't know a shard of English. good times.

Relatively low crime in Cancun. Take advantage of the busses. They are cheap, clean and can get you anywhere around Cancun.

Thanks....I've heard all these stories of people getting in Taxis and ending up having to pay the cab drivers to get back home.... I guess I'll just keep my wad of cash well hidden and to myself. I'm supposed to be picked up from the airport and taken to my hotel by a transfer company....so hopefully I'll have no trouble finding the right one.

Rohypnol has recently been reformulated to turn any fluid it's mixed in a bright blue.*

If you're a guy, order drinks with blue curacao or Hpnotiq.

If you're a chick, do not order drinks with blue curacao or Hpnotiq.

That is all.

* uhh... so I'm told?

Bring a good sun block, drink only bottled water & make sure you don't get ice cubes with any drinks, don't forget the pepto if you do get sick 🙂.

You won't have any problems finding your shuttle van. Just watch who is grabbing your bags Scarpozzi. Some of those guys are very grabby - and once they get your bags they haul ASS and I found that we almost had to run to keep up with them! They expect a tip of course, a couple bucks will do.

oh and remember the phrase: "Cervesa, por favor" 😉

Be sure to try the Miami Vice and Banana Monkey drinks when you get there....I hadn't heard of either prior to my Cancun trip and enjoyed them very much. 😀

Yeah, it's kinda of a madhouse just as soon as you step out of the airport. But once you've found your particular agency, you'll be fine.

The prices are in pesos. They will take American money, but will most likely give you your change in pesos. Be careful and mindful of the exchange rate, they like to screw you in how much change they give back. Best bet would be to go ahead and exchange some of your money at the beginning and use pesos to pay with when possible. Things are generally inexpensive there, though some of the more tourist trap-type places are more expensive. Do your shopping for authentic Mexican items downtown in the open air market. Haggle over prices and work vendors with the same items against each other. It's gonna cost you considerably more if you didn't go the All-Inclusive route. The tours/excursions are kinda pricey, but some are well worth it. The Jungle Tour is one of the cheapest and is really cool if you like snorkeling and jet skis. I hear that crime has picked up throughout Mexico due to it being an election year or something like that, but you shouldn't encounter any problems if you're staying in the strip/downtown areas.

Haven't been to Blue Bay, so I don't know anything about it.

As someone else said, make use of the buses there. It's only 2 or 3 pesos to ride and they have plenty of stops to make getting around easier. MUCH cheaper than taxis.

That's another good point. Outrun everyone else on the plane to Customs. Customs in Mexico is slow as hell. You want to be as close to the front of the line as humanly possible.
