Little nervous going. The only time I've ever been in Mexico was a hellish border hop @ 9:30 pm to Tiajuana for some underage drinking a few years back.

Anyone been to Cancun? What should we do? What's a good place to stay?

Are you youngish?

I think most older folks tend to go to Cabo San Lucas or Acapulco.

I've never been to Cancun, but I know friends who have and they said it's pretty wild. :)

I went to Acapulco for spring break a few years ago. Fun. We stayed at a nice five star hotel that had a private beach and was sort of away from the party scene. It was kind of tucked away in some exclusive neighborhood. So, we had our privacy and a quiet place to hang out when we needed it and all the partying was a short taxi ride away.

Is it safe to say we'd need a car rental in cancun ? We're staying for 5 nights. Is it the preferred method of transportation for tourists ?

When are you going? If you're going in December, expect it to be full of college students on break. Also, don't show overt signs that you're American to the locals, they hate Americans. Americans are ignorant, litter, loud (with their parties that is), treat the locals like crap, etc, so they don't like them. Canadians that go down are actually told by the hotels and advisors to put a flag on their backpacks etc.

Don't expect stuff to be cheap either if you're going to stick by the hotel. You need to go into the local towns to score the goodstuff, and like i said, the locals don't like Americans... this includes the local law. But police can be paid off (they actually expect to be). Don't be proud and argue with them even if you're in the right.

Note to self: bring Canadian flag to Cancun

Cancun 10 years ago was awesome, it was little known and even though it was still a fairly large city it had a small town feel to it. However within the past 5 years it has become a tourist trap with insanely high prices. Now it is generally a dirty and sketchy place. Think Bourbon Street on the beach..Essentially it is a town now geared towards 18-21 year old spring breakers. With that being said expect to see mega disco clubs namely Daddy O's, Senor Frogs etc... Other than that it is just like any other beach resort in the fact that it has Scuba Diving, Parasailing, Jet-skiing etc. The taxi drivers, restuarants, and pretty much any establishment there will rip you off any chance they get. The hotels have "filtered" water which if you have a bad stomach will still give you Montezumas Revenge. If you go to a restuarant dont drink the water or if you get a Coke etc dont get it with ice. The fact is after 5+ years of spoiled college kids spending mommy and daddy's money on spring break the locals feel that they can get away with charging ridiculous prices on anything and everything. Not trying to get you down on your honeymoon, its just not what I would consider a good honeymoon destination anymore.

I've been there twice and am going again this December. I do not agree with a single thing in your post.
The locals and police were extremely friendly and very helpful, even downtown. You will be treated as you treat them
Prices for goods are very compareable to the US and even less expensive for some things such as beer and tequlia.

As for what to do while there:

Enjoy the beautiful beaches (you cant swim though due to a bad undertow)
Parasail or rent jet skis
Take a day trip to Cozumel
Take a day trip to Chichen Itza ruins (very interesting)
Snorkel or SCUBA dive the coral reef
Go downtown to the markets. It's a blast "negotiating" with the locals
Go to Senor Frog's for a crazy night of dancing and drinking

A few tips:

Take the bus anywhere for 5 pesos
Do not wander off the strip after dark. Travel off the strip after dark can be dangerous
Drink only bottled water and remember that mixed drinks contain ice that may not be purified
If you stay at an all-inclusive give the bartender at the pool $10.00 every morning and you will be treated like a king

Have a great time

What are you guys into? Cancun is more of a place for singles to go get their freak on, but any place tropical is good for couples. Post or PM what you both like to do and I can tell some good places to go.

umm you should have sex, i think that would be a good idea.

exactly what i was thinking. The time I went to cancun, it felt like everyone was always trying to take advantage of me(not in the nasty way.. but in the money way)

The outdoors is awesome. Beaches and sand.. OMG!

but when it came to eating, clubbing, and buying things, I always felt like I was being ripped off or someone was trying to pull a quick one.

So just some words of advice, enjoy the beaches, just dont get scammed.

Also ride the bus.. it saves a ton of money and is better IMO
