We are planning to go up to Canada and I was wondering what if any the requirements are for getting accross the border. Do we need birth certifcates or any thing special like that?

I just went up last night to Montreal. No problem at customs whatsoever, all you need is a photo drivers lincense. I am from VT though, so its real easy to get up there.

It varies. I used to go up all the time with nothing more than my drivers license. A couple trips ago they told me (when returning to the US) that I needed to get a passport or a certified birth certificate (not the hospital one) before they'd allow me back in again.

I've had my vehicle (and myself) searched a couple times, but I expect that with the amount of travel up there I was doing. Once I got my passport they haven't said another word about it.

Oh, something obvious, but I'll mention it just because. If you happen to have a weapon in your car or on your person usually, remember to keep it at home. They're notoriously picky about that. (And yes, I forgot to leave my handgun at home once...I had to drive back down to seattle to leave it at a friends house)

Canadian customs is a breeze. It's the US side that'll strip your car down. At least that's how it is for us up here going down there.
For Americans coming up, you should have it easy both ways.

Correct me if im wrong but i think you only need a pasport if you are going to be staying in Canada (or Mexico for that matter too) for an extened amount of time (longer than a week i think).

i always have my BC and a driver's license whenever we goto Windsor. It saves time incase they ask for both pieces, but a driver's license is usually adequate.

It depends.

I'd say bring BC & DL, since my aunt & her family came up [to Alberta] to visit for a bit, & they forgot their Birth Certificates.

Apparently the Canadian border officals can be just as bad as the US ones are, since they had a hell of a time getting across.

Snow shoes, skiis, snowmobile, Parkay, matching Toque, the usual stuff. ;)

Leave your gun(s) at home, they'll be confiscated.
