He likes the Diablo 2, ut2004 and World of Warcraft games.

The current card is his machine chugs quite a bit so I looked around and narrowed the choice between a Sapphire 9800 pro for $163 bucks or a Nvidia 6600 with 256 megs of ram for around $200.(all prices Canadian)

I know the Nvidia card only has a 128 bit memory bus, but it has double the memory and the memory is clocked higher I think so it should offset the memory bus on the radeon. Is the extra $40 worth it?
 
Hell yes.. heh. 6600 GT is far faster than a 9800. And if you watch ebay or other sites, 6600 GT's go for like $120-$170. I just recently bought a bfg 6600 GT pci-e for $150 shipped. BFG has lifetime warranty, and has the top cooling out of all 6600 GT cards. BFG's generaly sell for more now because of demand but, you can find like a leadtek or evga 6600 GT for like $140 no problem.

I think thats a vanilla 6600.

If its a regular 6600 then I'd recommend the 9800 (as long as its no a Pro-EZ or SE). If its a 6600GT then get it, as it'll be worth it over the 9800.

It's not a GT model and it has to be AGP. It's just a 6600 256 meg. Are you talking Canadian Prices?

OK the Radeon it is then. From what I have been told it is the one that can be flashed into an XT. The GT's around here go for $240-$270 so the extra 100 bucks would be a waste due to the games he plays.

Yeah, thats quite a premium. Here in the US the GTs are only about $25-50 more expensive.

Yeah, the 9800 will be great for those games.
 
do some real pricing on these cards, and be aware of the fact that a new line of ati cards are set to come out in the next month or so (so I believe). at that time, a purchase would be advisable.

all this jabber about 9800 vs. 6600 is really quite negligable for the games you've mentioned, save WoW which may benefit from a slightly faster card. It all depends on what you'd like to spend. Hell, why not splurge the $599 for a 7800GTX?

Oh, that's right...you need PCIe.

Thats the thing though. If I keep going over the limit a little bit I end up spending too much money and later this month i'm rolling pennies for my Family Vacation.

If I allow myself to spend more than 200 to get a GT, I'll then see deals like this one HEREsaying man for $30 bucks more it will kick a 6600 GT all over the place. And so on and so on.

 
I wish people would stop staying a 6600GT would thump a 9800pro - they are really more equivalent than most think. And in your stepson's case, the 9800pro would likely be faster and definately a lot cheaper!

As you'll see in the benchies, the 6600GT only consistently wins at high res with AA/AF turned on (which, lets face it, you can't expect to run with either card in modern games). At more reasonable resolutions in realistic non AA/AF modes, the 9800pro wins more often in FPS, and almost always in strategy games. In fact, if you remove Doom3, the 9800pro is the pretty clear outperformer in all categories!

The cheapest AGP 6600GT on NCIX is $255 with a $20 mail-in rebate .... whereas the 9800 pro is only $181.

I'd let the benchies do the talking, personally.
 
Both are great cards. Everyone will lean toward more power.

I think it boils down to this if there is a game in 2006 that you want to be sure you can play then the 6600GT is the way to go. I believe that card will be the mainstream minimum for next years games.

The 6600gt does stomp the 9800pro.....they are not equivalent at all. Go read real benchmarks, or do some of your own. 6600GT is faster than the x700 and close to x800 in certain senarios.

I would agree. 6600GT if you do some shopping around, id bet you can find it pretty cheap, especially on ebay. I guess canadian prices are a bit different but....For the games he plays though, either cards would be fine. Even a 6600 non-gt. I think most would agree, the 6600GT is the best bang for the buck.
 
Guys, why are you telling him to fork over $75 more for a 6600GT when his son is going to be playing Diablo 2, UT2K4, and WoW? You think he's picky and is going to want to play older games at 16x12 AA/AF (minus WoW). Give it a break. And yes, I count UT2K4 as an older game. Graphics cards from the Radeon 9500 and up have no problem running it nicely. The 9800pro is much cheaper than a 6600GT, and will run the listed titles beautifully at good detail if needed.

Ok, if you don't like the detailed, impartial round-up at Xbit, how about the latest AGP VGA charts at Tom's. The 6600GT does a bit better here than at XBit, in that there's no real difference between the 6600GT and the 9800pro at low-med resolutions without AA/AF, except in Doom3 (as opposed to Xbit, which is more likely to show the 9800pro in the lead). Perhaps this is is yet another "unreal" round-up from a major review site for your tastes? Again, any "stomping" going on happens at high AA/AF levels and in Doom3.

Since the 6600GT typically costs ~35% more in Canada than the 9800 pro, I would be hard pressed to recommend it based on these "unreal" benchmarks.







 
I ordered the 9800 Pro. Today I looked at some benchmarks around and it is a little bit faster than the 6600, and a little slower, but competative, with the 6600gt.

I think it is a good balance at a good price.
