The test drive is not simply to "perform their control techniques on you". It is to see if you like the car.
You don't want the dealer to waste your time and they don't want you to waste their time. It was very easy to spot tire kickers and it sucked knowing I was wasting my time.
Do some research and get a reasonable price that you're willing to pay.
Visit the dealer, drive the car and be straight up. Tell them you're wiling to pay X. If you're on crack the salesman will thank you for your time but tell you sorry can't help you.
If you're reasonable with your price he'll talk and try to bs you a little.
Keep in mind they will do the "check with my manager" thing with you. But also keep in mind in most dealerships the salesman can not set the price. He really does have to get the OK from up the food chain.
Be polite and you'll be treated the same. I've told lots of customers to walk because they were assholes. If you're an asshole at the sale you're just going to be an asshole when you're in for service. And the profit on the car has to be worth it.
