Going to buy a car from a dealer, How Can I drive it back?

I'm going to go buy a car from a dealer about 1hr away from me either today or tomorow. I have a valid license. I have to go to the DMV once I get back to transfer my plates & call the insurance company to activate my insurance once I get it, but after I buy the car am do I legally drive the thing back home?

you can drive it without insurance for 30 days or so... as long as the insurance company knows you are getting a new car.

I want to be able to come home & compare insurance rates. Do I have to get insurance before I leave? Isnt there a temp way?

your current insurer will cover you in the meantime, but call other insurers. If they give you a better deal, send them a check and cancel your current policy.

Don't you legally have 24 hours to get things registered once you purchase it?
All states are different; he needs to get specifics on his state.

In some you get a temp tag. In Al you merely have to register with 10 or 30 days - I think the latter - and in the mean time you can put a "tag applied for" (even though it's not) piece of paper on the back of the car.

You do need insurance, though I bought my last car on a saturday and just drove home without it, then got it first thing monday morning and left it garaged through sunday.

NO

You call your insurance from there
They give you temporary tags
You drive it home......

Insurance companies do not issue Temp tags. THe dealership does. The dealer has to give you temp tags before you leave the lot.

Are you buying this car outright? or financing it? If you are financing it you will have to wait about 45 days for all the paperwork to go through the channels to your DMV. when you DMV gets the paperwork they will send you a card to tell you that they are ready for you to come get your plates.

You can call your insurance people to tell them about your new car and they will print out temp coverage cards for you. but you have to go down and pick them up because the insurance company will need to inspect your car for any existing damage. Plus you need the temp cards to prove you have insurance.

Again I think that depends on the state. The one car I've financed I registered within a few days, just taking in whatever papers I was given by the dealership; they give papers to allow you to register it.

???? I have never had to show my insurance company my new car, I've bought several, both in Michigan and Georgia.

He's in Illinois, your in Colorado. Every state, heck even counties, have different rules about this.

Chiboy, call the dealership, believe me, they'll let you know what you need to leave the lot with a car! 😉

I'm getting such a good deal, I dont want to call them for any reason except "Do you have the car still?" lol

My insurance company (State Farm) will automatically cover me on any newly-purchased vehicle for up to 30 days without prior notification.

I actually had to do this in Canada. Its mainly for collision/comprehensive. They take a 3/4 side shot to see glass and body condition. Its no big deal really especially when I could get a million coverage up there for the same price as $50k down in Ohio.

I had to show pics of a car I bought when it was an old car (Canada), but I don't think you need to for new ones...

In CA, if you buy the car (even if its used) from a dealer your insurance does not have to inspect it. I just recently got a used 02 Altima (pics are coming) from a dealer and my insurance agents told me that they didnt have to inspect it because it is from a dealer. Not sure if it is the same way in Il.

yup, get ready to pay more for insurance.

Here in Texas, if you have car insurance, it will cover whatever you uy as long as you tell your insurance company you are getting a new vehicle. Also, the dealer handles all the paperwork and registration, that's why there is a +TT&L behind all the prices

In California when you buy a new car the dealer takes care of registering the car and all the DMV paperwork. You recieve your plates in the mail about 3 months later. The dealer gives you a temporary registration which you stick inside on the windshield in the lower right corner, some stick it on the rear window though.

With used cars if you buy it private party I believe you have 10 or 14 days to register it.

My insurance gives me up to 30 days to register the car and they cover me in the meantime. On a new car I just call them up and they extend coverage to the new car.
