I really want to understand linux so after reading a few forums on this subject everyone recommands Mandrake for first time beginners. So why not but there are so many version. My system is a 1.1ghz AMD T-Bird 512SDRAM

So maybe you guys can help me out on which version to choose.
 
The Sparc ones are for Sun SPARC processors, the AXP ones are for DEC/Compaq/HP Alpha processors, the IA64 are for Intel Itanium processors, the PPC are for Motorola PowerPC (Macs mainly) processors.

Get Mandrake 8.2/i586 ISO Image.
 
I suggest u get urself a good book. I like Linux Compleat by Sybex Press. Its only 19.99 for 1000 pgs. It is a compalation of the best parts of several books. most are 2001 or newer. Lost of poeple have recomended Running Linux from O'Reily Press. I havent Read it, eventho several ppl recomend it, it was written in 1999 and was 39.99. your coise.

Also redbeared ya i know i should get a book on linux but i have read many articles on Mandrake and how everything works. I printed out a book practically also i have a friend who is linux literate so I should be in good shape. Thanks though.
 
I would not try 9.0 Beta sa my first distro though...

Mandrake 8.2 is in my opinion, the best so far. (among other Mandrake distros..dont want to start *another* distro-war here🙂)

oh please not a distro war,
mandrake 9.0 is actually 99% stable for me, and I'm trying beta2....beta3 is out now.
but still I'd reccomend going out and BUYING 8.2 powerpack.
