Agreed.

My dad won't let me build my own computer (I'm 13), he says it is too risky. Alienware was my next best option (for the price).

Just send me the list of the items in their computer, I will charge you an additional $1500.00 for labor, and I will still be $1000.00 cheaper than what they are charging you.

Alienware = People who like throwing away money.

Then you need to explain to him that there is very little risk. Besides, you could probably destroy 800 dollars worth of stuff and still build a computer for less than what alien ware charges. You need him to relise that alienware is a huge rip-off, often over a thousand dollars more than what you would pay to build it yourself.

Perhaps money is no object in this situation and his father wants a system that they know will work? Alienware prints off reports of the benchmarks the system has pumped out.

Alienware is a huge ripoff. It's unfortunate your pop's giving in to FUD on this - DIY PCs have never been easier than they are now. Try showing him this thread and letting him know that forum members here, many of whom are professionals in the IT field, will be glad to help with component selection and troubleshooting, on the off chance you run into a problem. On top of saving money it'd be a valuable learning experience for you.

I would recommend building your own PC. Check out pricewatch.com and look for deals, you'll save anywhere from 750-1500 dollars for pretty much the same specs.

Build it man. After you're done you'll never look at a preassembled computer the same way. I built my first computer at around 15, took me a couple of weeks to get it working right, but it was the among the most educational 2 weeks I've ever had. I didn't destroy or damage any parts because I did tons of research on the internet and in the library figuring out what to do and not to do. If you run into a problem then you know that there are literally thousands of people here who are just aching to show their tech skills by solving your dilemma.

I'm 14, and I managed to build a computer myself. I could do it last year too, I guess, just couldn't round up enough cash...

I've done some major upgrading (everything except case and PSU) on one of the family PCs when I was 12 or 13, and I'm about to build my own now, building is the way to go if you have to buy don't buy from alienware

cyber power system is a good choice. and people must realize that building a comp is not always feasible for people. Its not just money, but its time and effort. For me, last year or so I would have rather paid and gotten a computer made, and spent my time with my actual work. However, now that i have some time, i'm gonna learn on how to put a comp together. But at that time I would have paid a premium to get a comp made becuase I could have spent that time doing work.

Hey, I'm 13 also. What convinced my dad to let me build was the fact that there is a local shop around the corner who promised to help me out if there were any problems.

yeah i'd goto my local bestbuy, fry's or compusa and have them build it. you'd come out cheaper and have just as good a computer.
